2019 NFL Team Previews: Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys come into the 2019 season with a ton of talent but a lot of distractions over contracts issues that have dominated headlines.

The Dallas Cowboys Have a Lot of Decisions to Make

Do the Dallas Cowboys pay Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott? The obvious answer would be that you pay your quarterback even though in this case he isn’t your best player. Unfortunately, your best player, Ezekiel Elliott plays running back and that position is being devalued with every passing year in the NFL.

The other issue is that off the field, he is one incident away from being suspended for a long time. Do you really invest in a guy like that?

As for the Dallas Cowboys QB, he is not elite but he is asking for elite money. They don’t seem to have a choice but to pay him but if they do, they will certainly lose a few of their key pieces. These are the issues facing the Dallas Cowboys this season. The most likely scenario is that both Dak an Zeke will play for Dallas this season. It is also very possible that it will be their last season together. All of this and we haven’t even spoken about Amari Cooper’s contract situation.

The Dallas Cowboys Have the Talent

As far as talent is concerned, the Dallas Cowboys have enough of that to compete for the playoffs. If you listen to owner Jerry Jones, he expects to them compete for a Super Bowl. That isn’t that far fetched when you look at the talent on this roster. They have one of the best players in the NFL in running back Ezekiel Elliott. They also have an elite receiver in Amari Cooper. Although most people would agree that Dak Prescott is not an elite quarterback, he does win. He’s also never hurt and that is a very underrated quality as a starting QB in the NFL.

All of that talent at the skill positions also has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL playing in front of it. They aren’t as good as they were a few years ago but this unit is still top 10 in the league. This offense has all of the necessary parts to compete with any team in the NFL.

Dallas Defense Was Elite Last Season

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys had one of the best defenses in the NFL. There is no reason why this season should be any different. It is very important that the Cowboys take advantage of this unique opportunity that they have. They have two young linebackers on rookie contracts that have show elite potential and an emerging corner on a cheap contract as well.

In Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, the Dallas Cowboys have two borderline elite linebackers. The only reason they are borderline is because they have to do it for more than one season to be considered among the best. If these two play this season anywhere close to the level they showed last year, the Dallas Cowboys probably have the best linebacker duo in the NFL.

At corner Byron Jones showed that his conversion from safety to corner was the right move for his career. He was easily a top five corner in the league last year. If he shows that type of production again this season, he will be one of many on this Dallas Cowboys defense looking for more money.

Overall Outlook for the Dallas Cowboys

The only Cowboys star that got his money so far is Demarcus Lawrence. Good thing too because he is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. With all of the talent on this roster, this is no reason they should not be in the playoffs and making noise as a Super Bowl contender.

The real question is, who will be on this roster by this time next year? To have so many players with contract disputes at the same time has to be a huge distraction. Not to mention the fact that the possibility exists that Ezekiel Elliott might sit out regular season games. The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott have shown that they aren’t nearly as good without Zeke. With all of this uncertainty heading into the season, the Dallas Cowboys come in at No. 14 in our 2019 NFL Team rankings.
