Iowa State’s offense has been funneled through running back Breece Hall. After  an impressive freshman season, he is one of the nation’s best running backs.

In 11 games, he has rushed for 1,436 yards, has 19 touchdowns, and also has 21 catches for 170 yards with an additional two more scores. He leads the country in rushing yards and attempts, and is only second in rushing touchdowns behind Alabama’s Najee Harris.

Oregon Ducks vs Iowa State Cyclones Preview

Cyclones Air it Out

The Cyclones are not shy at passing the ball either, as junior quarterback Brock Purdy has established an impressive season too. He has completed 66 percent of his passes and thrown for 2,594 yards along with 18 touchdowns.

All of this combines for a great offensive performance. ISU is arguably one of the more balanced offensive teams out there since they rush an average of 36 times a game and throw for 31.

On defense, they have been nearly just as good if not better than their offense. Looking at rushing defense, Iowa State ranks 10th nationally, only allowing 104.6 yards per game.

Compared to teams that have played roughly 10 or more games in the shortened season, the Cyclones place fourth in rushing touchdowns allowed, only giving up a total nine touchdowns on the ground in 11 contests.

Ducks Keep It on the Ground

It is no secret that Oregon’s offensive identity is catered to running the ball, as they average 36 attempts per game. For this matchup, the Ducks will need to have success early against ISU’s run defense in order to open up their passing game.

Oregon’s offense is steady, averaging 4.9 yards per carry with three running backs totaling more than 55 carries in six games. This is a balanced attack across the board.

Junior running backs CJ Verdell and Travis Dye are the go-to rushers, and even quarterback Tyler Shough has shown off his running game with 263 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Shough’s success in passing often plays off his ability to neutralize aggressive defenses with his running ability.

Even though a Heisman this year will not have his name on it, he is just as dangerous as one qualifying. At first, he attempted just 15 passes last year as a backup. Now, he stepped up in the starter role by throwing for 1,480 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

The Cyclones will not turn this into a blowout, but Breece Hall makes a big difference. The Ducks have struggled this season against the run, allowing 159.8 yards per game and 13 rushing touchdowns so this is not a great matchup for them.
