ATP Cup 2020 has just got its first semi-finalist after team Australia qualified for the final four. Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur won the decisive doubles tie against Great Britain’s Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury.
The match was as wild as it gets, with a breathtaking tiebreak deciding the winning team. The final score of this ATP Cup 2020 doubles duel was 6-3, 3-6, 18-16.
Excitements started even before the players arrived at the courts in Sydney. The decision of Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt to pick Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur for the doubles tie was a bit controversial, considering that the two players had finished their singles’ matches just a few hours earlier.
Still, they showed no signs of fatigue, managing to play for more than one hour and a half before scoring the point that got their team the victory.
The Epic Tiebreak
The match was entertaining from the very start, with the Australians looking really fired up despite not being able to handle the Brits in the first set. The Great Britain team won the first set relatively comfortably 6-3.
It was the other way around in the second set, which meant that the two teams had to play another one to decide the winner. The so-called super tiebreak was played, which is a first-to-ten tiebreak where a two-point difference is needed for a win.
The super tiebreaker went back and forth, with the Great Britain team getting the chance to score the match-winner at 11-10. Still, Australians managed to pull through, before finally sealing the deal at 18-16.
“Today was probably one of the best moments of my career, definitely. Just making it through to the semi-final, the first-ever ATP Cup in that type of fashion, was pretty special.”Nick Kyrgios said after the match.
The victory over the Great Britain team means that the Australians have qualified for the ATP Cup 2020 semi-final. The total score between the two national teams was 2:1.
The doubles tie was the decisive match that brought Australia the advantage after the two singles’ duels had set the score even at 1:1.
Australia got the 1:0 lead after Nick Kyrgios beat Cameron Norrie. The Brits equalized when Dan Evans won against Alex de Minaur, so the third match had to be played in order to decide which team gets to the semis.
ATP Cup 2020 Semis
Australia has booked a place in the ATP Cup 2020 semi-finals, where this team will face either Belgium or Spain. The two national teams have their quarter-final duels on the program today.
The same is the case with the other semi-final, where Russia will play either against Serbia or Canada.
According to the oddsmakers, Spain is the no.1 favorite for winning the trophy. The ATP Cup 2020 odds make Rafael Nadal and his teammates the biggest contenders for the title, followed by Russia, Australia, Serbia, Belgium, and Canada in that exact order.
The inaugural ATP Cup serves as a suitable opener of the new tennis season, with another big event coming up in a few weeks’ time in the same country. Unless it gets delayed due to air quality issues, the Australian Open 2020 will start on Monday, January 20.
