In the day when Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer played, the biggest news came from Frances Tiafoe. The latter one made a huge sensation, and advanced to the next round of the Australian Open. Nadal and FedEx also have, same as Gregor Dimitrov and Tomas Berdych. Marin Cilic avoided upset.

Frances Tiafoe Stuns Kevin Anderson

Tiafoe rallied back after being down one set and 3-0 in the second. His opponent was Kevin Anderson, the guy who has two Grand Slam finals, and was the No.5 seed here in Melbourne. In the end, Tiafoe managed to get out of this one as a winner, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, defeating this rival after three straight losses in head-to-head events. Andreas Seppi will be his next obstacle.

Rafael Nadal was excellent against Mathew Ebden, the local favorite, slicing him with 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. There was no way for Ebden to avoid such an outcome, because Nadal started pounding strong right from the start. The Spaniard will meet another Aussie in the next round, Alex De Mianur, the 19-year old sensation, and no doubt, we are going to see an excellent game here.

The situation wasn’t like that with Roger Federer who did win his match against Dan Evans but after two tiebreaks 6-7 (5), 6-7 (3), 3-6. Federer was struggling with his movement on the court, and if weren’t for his excellent serve in some crucial moments, he would definitely lose at least one set. FedEx faces Taylor Fritz next, one of the biggest hopes of the American tennis alongside Tiafoe.

Gregor Dimitrov had a tough game against the veteran Pablo Cuevas. The player from Bulgaria won with 3-1, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5, and secured the advance to the next round, where he plays against Thomas Fabiano.

Tomas Berdych was more than confident against another veteran of this sport, Robin Haase, as the let only 7 games to his rival from the other side of the net, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Diego Schwartzman is his the next rival.

Marin Cilic had the biggest trouble of all mentioned players. The former US Open champion edged out Mackenzie McDonald, the 23-year old who won the 2016 NCAA tennis championship. The Croat had to work a lot, but in the end, this contest went in his favor, 7-5, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4. His rival in the next round is his old acquaintance Fernando Verdasco.

Sharapova Sets the Clash With Wozniacki

In the ladies competition, all the favorites trashed their opponents. After today’s games, we will have one big matchup in the third round, between Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki. Beyond questions, it is a derby of the day.

The two ladies reached this stage after swift wins in this round. Sharapova smashed Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-1, Wozniacki was equally cruel towards Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-3.

Sloane Stephens defeated her ex-partner in doubles, Timea Babos. The US Open champion from 2017, was more than good and dropped only four games, 6-3, 6-1. Her ambitions for this campaign at this edition of the Aussie Open are big, and don’t be surprised if she goes deep in the second week.

The No.2 seed Angelique Kerber didn’t have any particular issues against Beatriz Haddad Maia, and she progressed to the next stage, 6-2, 6-3.
