The leading duo in the English Premier League standings recorded victories today. Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the biggest clash of the round, while Man City beat Crystal Palace on the road. With these results, the situation between the Reds and the Citizens stayed the same.
One-Two Punch Of the Reds Knock-Out the Blues
Anfield was the venue of a very important game this Sunday. Both Liverpool and Chelsea needed a win, because of their respective situations. The Reds to keep the pace with Manchester City, while Chelsea was desperate for three points which would improve their position in the Champions League race. Four teams are currently involved in the chase for two places.
Eventually, the home team won with 2-0. It was a typical Liverpool-style victory in which the hosts flashed and stunned the opponent, scoring two goals in a two-minute storm. Sadio Mane opened the show in a 51st minute, after Mo Salah and Jordan Henderson made a nice effort before the English player sent an excellent cross to Mane who waited on the far post. The Senegalese scored after a header.
Mo Salah amazed the whole world with his goal, two minutes after that. He made a fabulous strike from some 25 yards, sending the ball besides Kepa and into the upper corner of his net. The Spanish goalkeeper was helpless.
After that Chelsea tried to reply, but Eden Hazard didn’t have the slightest of luck. The Belgian international was denied by the post on one occasion, and in the second he hit Alisson, who had a lot of fortune at that moment.
As the game went by Liverpool slowly decreased the pace of the play until they completely restrained the Blues.
Man City Overcomes Crystal Palace
Although it might have been a tough, physical challenge, Manchester City easily handled Cyrstal Palace at Selhurst Park. Guardiola’s boys won with 1-3 and bounced back after a defeat against Tottenham in the Champions League. The Citizens took care of the ball and kept it in their feet, especially after the opening goal.
That opener was Raheem Sterling’s work of art. He used Kevin De Bruyne’s assist and brought the lead to the hosts. That was everything from the first half. In the second 45 minutes, the fans saw more excitement, and three goals. In the 63rd minute, Sterling was at the right place when Leroy Sane sent the ball towards him,
Crystal Palace decreased the distance nine minutes before the end, through Luka Milivojevic who now scored from the free kick. It was Serb’s 12th goal of the season.
Gabriel Jesus confirmed the win, after another assist of Kevin De Bryne.
At the moment Liverpool holds the first place in the Premiership with 85 points. But what is troubling the Reds is the fact that they have only two points more than City, who has one game fewer.
Now about the famous Champions League race. Tottenham has 67 points and 33 games played. Chelsea has 66 but 34 matches. Not so long ago they were the ones who had the nicest prospects for a top 4 place.
United is fifth with 64 and 33 events, while Arsenal has 64 and only 32 contests.
