Manchester City’s Route To Porto
It has been another excellent season for Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side, and they stand on the cusp of achieving something remarkable this weekend. Only one previous English side has achieved a treble including the Champions League, and City will be looking to replicate that on Saturday. City have already won the Premier League and League Cup this term, but they had never reached the Champions League final before this season. Guardiola was brought in to win the European honour, and he could stay true to that promise this weekend.
City have looked unshakable in the competition this season, as they conceded just one goal in the eight games that they played in the group stages and the round of 16. City needed to battle in the quarterfinals to see off Borussia Dortmund, with Phil Foden producing excellent displays to guide City to a 4-2 aggregate win. Last season’s runners-up laid in wait in the semi-finals, but City stayed calm and won both legs. The return leg at the Etihad saw the Premier League winners add to their advantage, as they booked their passage with a 2-0 home success.
Chelsea’s Route To Porto
It has been a much harder season to assess how far Chelsea have come this term. The Blues just about managed to finish in the top four of the Premier League, as Tottenham’s win over Leicester City secured their spot. Thomas Tuchel has already experienced defeat in a final with the Blues this term, as they were beaten in a pulsating FA Cup final by Leicester in the middle of May.
Some of Chelsea’s best performances this term have come in the Champions League, as they have conceded just three goals in the 12 games that they have played. Frank Lampard steered the club into the knockout rounds, before Thomas Tuchel took over in the second half of the campaign. The Blues were excellent in the round of 16, as they saw off Atletico Madrid with ease. They avoided a potential banana skin in the following round, as they beat Porto. Chelsea managed to reach the final after goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount in the second leg against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.
The team selections could make for fascinating viewing on Saturday. Guardiola has a fully-fit squad to select from, while Tuchel will be sweating on the fitness of N’Golo Kante and Edouard Mendy.
Man City- 4-3-3 (Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Zinchenko, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Mahrez, Aguero, Foden)
Chelsea- 3-4-2-1 (Mendy, Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger, James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell, Havertz, Mount, Werner)
Manchester City vs Chelsea Pick & Prediction
Who will win the Champions League final:
It will be a fascinating battle between these two sides this weekend. The early stages of the game could be crucial. Chelsea will sit back and look to counter-attack City, which has worked against the Premier League champions on a number of occasions this season.
The Blues have been wasteful in front of goal, and a repeat of that this weekend would be seriously damaging to their chances. However, Guardiola is a manager that is renowned for getting over the line in finals, and with the quality of his side and momentum behind them, they could put on a clinic this weekend on the grandest stage.
