Dana White’s Contender Series Predictions (Week 9)

Middleweight: Leon Aliu vs Brunno Ferreira

We’ll start our DWCS Week 9 picks with the headliner bout, which we think is going to be a banger. Our prediction is that the fight between Leon Aliu (10-1) and Brunno Ferreira (8-0) is going to finish inside the distance. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if this fight ended in the first round. Why? Because these two guys have a total of 14 Round 1 finishes between them.

But is it going to be Leon Aliu who finishes Brunno Ferreira or the other way around? Our vote goes to Ferreira, the main reason being that he’s fought some really tough opponents so far.

For instance, each of his previous three opponents had double-figure wins in their portfolio. Meanwhile, Aliu has fought only once against a fighter with 10+ wins (back in 2018).

Contender Series Predictions:

Bantamweight: Raul Rosas Jr. vs Mando Gutierrez

Believe it or not, but Raul Rosas Jr. (5-0) is only 17 years old. If he beats Mando Gutierrez (7-1) who’s eight years his senior, Rosas Jr. Will make history by becoming the youngest mixed martial artist to earn a UFC contract.

So, will the teenager win in the only bantamweight fight of 2022 DWCS Week 9? We honestly doubt it. Even though the young gun is still undefeated as a pro, the fact is that he hasn’t fought against such a good opponent as Mando Gutierrez.

Both fighters are great grapplers, but Gutierrez a.k.a. El Toro has more experience than his opponent. He also looks stronger and seems to have better stamina than Rosas Jr., which could be the decisive factor in their DWCS clash.

Contender Series Predictions:

Heavyweight: Austen Lane vs Richard Jacobi

If you’re a fan of American football, the name Austen Lane might sound familiar. It’s because this guy used to be a defensive end for four different NFL teams across four years. After retiring from professional football, he switched to MMA.

So far, Lane’s fought 14 fights, winning 11 of those. As you’d expect from a 6’6 heavyweight, most of those wins (10) happened via knockout/technical knockout. What put him on Dana White’s radar were his performances in Fury FC, where he is the reigning heavyweight champ.

Lane’s opponent on Tuesday evening is Richard Jacobi from Brazil, whose record is 6-0-1. That’s not bad, but you should know that he’s fought only one opponent with a winning record. And the opponent in question was 2-0 before the fight with Jacobi.

Contender Series Predictions:

Lightweight: Nurullo Aliev vs Josh Wick

Even though Nurullo Aliev did have some problems with obtaining the US travel visa, the man himself has recently confirmed that the DWCS fight with Josh Wick is on.

Aliev is 6-0 in his professional career, with five wins by decision. The only time he didn’t win by this method was when his opponent retired after Round 2 (Aliev was awarded a TKO win). He’s a smart fighter with plenty of weapons in his arsenal, both offensive and defensive. His takedown defense is what can make or break him in the DWCS fight. It’s because this Tuesday, he’s locking horns with a submission artist, Josh Wick.

Nicknamed The White Mamba, Wick has a 12-5 record with seven wins by submission. However, his previous two fights saw him beat his opponent by TKO (punches). What this means is that he too is a Swiss knife of a fighter.

Contender Series Predictions:

Flyweight: Roybert Echeverria vs Jafel Filho

Knowing that Roybert Echeverria is 7-0 in his pro career would make you think he’s a strong favorite to beat Jafel Filho (13-2) in DWCS Week 9. However, most of Echeverria’s wins happened either against inexperienced fighters or those with a horrible record.

For instance, he’s recorded two wins against Earnest Walls, a fighter whose current record is 2-19. Further, Echeverria defeated six fighters who had no more than seven fights under their belt at the time.

In fact, Echeverria’s most notable opponent was Wascar Cruz (12-8) whom he defeated by decision in December 2021. Still, there’s a caveat – Cruz is a fading 38-year-old fighter who’s lost four fights since the start of the decade.

Meanwhile, Jafel Filho has faced some really tough rivals. He is 13-2, coming to Vegas on a four-fight win streak. In three of those fights, he fought against fighters with pretty decent records (9-6, 10-3, and 8-3, to be precise).

Filho defeated two of those opponents via submission and we feel as if he might do the same this coming Tuesday.
