NCAAB: #12 Drake vs #5 Miami Odds, and Picks (Mar 17)

  • Drake coasted past Bradley, 77-51, winning the MVC title game.
  • Miami lost to Duke in the ACC tourney, by a score of 85-78.
  • This will be the very first matchup between these two teams in their program histories.

Drake (27-7) and Miami (25-7) take each other for a classic 12 vs 5 matchup. Miami surged through ACC play but came up short in the conference tourney, and now faces a very dangerous Drake squad.

Game Preview

Drake redeemed their loss against Bradley from a few weeks ago by dominating them in the MVC finals, clinching the conference’s automatic bid. They’re a dangerous 12-seed, with true upset potential. Drake only faced two tourney teams during the regular season, Mississippi State and Louisiana, but won both games with confidence. They’ll face their toughest task so far against the Hurricans.

Miami is a team that’s difficult to analyze. They posted a fantastic 25-7 record, going 15-5 in ACC play. The Hurricanes were very hot down the stretch, going 9-2 in their last 11 games. With that being said, Miami also played against a soft non-conference schedule, which makes their level more uncertain with the ACC being considered weaker this year. A win here would help prove their capability.

Picks

In the final two weeks of the season, I had Miami marked down as a team to potentially pick to win the entire tourney. They were coasting through every game and looked completely dominant. Not a ton has changed since then, but they finished 2-2, and I’ve become less confident in the ACC. A brutal first-round draw against Drake may be the final nail in their coffin. I like the upset here.
