NCAAB: #5 Duke vs #4 Tennessee Odds, and Picks (Mar 18)

  • Duke dominated Oral Roberts in the first round, winning 75-51.
  • Tennessee survived a thriller, winning 58-55 against Louisiana.
  • These two teams last met on November 21, 2011, in a game that Duke won 77-67.

Duke (27-8) and Tennessee (24-8) face off in a classic 4 vs 5 bout. The Blue Devils are scorching hot, and enter this game as the favorite despite being the lower seed. The Volunteers won’t go down easily.

Game Preview

Duke cruised past Oral Roberts in the first round, with their victory never in doubt. Despite facing a 30-win team, they jumped out to an 11-0 lead right off the bat and never looked back. The Blue Devils defense has been lethal during their current 10-game win streak. They’ve given up just 61.7 ppg in that span. Duke will have a chance to improve on that even further against a banged-up Volunteers.

Tennessee managed to stay alive, after narrowly escaping a dangerous Louisiana team. They won by 3 points, but led by a more confident margin for much of the game. Unfortunately, the Volunteers struggled as expected on offense, continuing to be without star PG Zakai Zeigler. Against Duke’s red-hot defense, it could be a long day, so they’ll need to rely on their own stringent defense to win.

Picks

This game is likely to be very low scoring, with tough defenses on both sides. Duke’s defense has been tremendous lately, and draws a matchup against a Tennessee team that scored just 58 points against Louisiana without Zeigler. On the other side, the Volunteers’ #2 ranked defense gets the benefit of facing Duke’s inexperienced four freshman starters. I’ll take the Duke to win 55-48 in this game.
