Euro 2020: Daily Results (June 29) – England Beat Germany After 55 Years, Ukraine Through with a Last-Minute Goal

  • England beats Germany in a major tournament for the first time since 1966
  • Ukraine scores the winner in stoppage time of extra time
  • England and Ukraine to meet in the quarterfinal of Euro 2020

“Football is a simple game, 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.” – Not anymore!

On the last day of Euro 2020 Round of 16, we saw England beating Germany 2-0 in the 90 minutes. About 45,000 fans at Wembley witnessed England’s first win against their arch-rivals in a major tournament in 55 years.

The previous time they did it was in 1966 when England won the World Cup. However, over the following few decades, Germany were far superior. We saw them beating Three Lions on many occasions, most notably in Euro 1996, when the current England manager missed the crucial penalty.

Fast-forward to 2021 and England got their revenge! Thanks to the goals scored by Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, Germany are out of the tournament. It’s England that gets to play in the quarterfinal, where they’ll face Ukraine.

Andriy Shevchenko’s boys got themselves a 2-1 victory against Sweden. It was 1-1 after two hours of play, and the match was heading to penalties. But then, an unlikely hero stepped up – Artem Dovbyk scored hist first-ever goal for Ukraine in the 121th minute of the match.

England Now the Overwhelming Favorites

If there’s a lucky team at Euro 2020, it’s Ukraine. First, they got past the group stage thanks to Sweden beating Poland, which put them in 4th place in the list of best 3rd-placed teams.

Then, they withstood Sweden’s numerous attacks in Round of 16, taking the game to extra time, and scoring the winner seconds before the end.

Ukraine got through to the quarterfinal, but that’s where they’ll be faced with their toughest challenge so far.

Not only are England favored to beat Ukraine at -227, but they’re also the #1 favorites to win the Euro 2020 title at +180.

One of the reasons is that their road to the Final seems relatively easy. If they beat Ukraine, England will face the winner of the Czech Republic vs. Denmark matchups in the semifinal.

They cannot play Spain, Belgium, or Italy before the Final, the three teams that are just behind England in the list of Euro 2020 favorites.
