EURO Qualifications Roundup: Ronaldo Injured, Serbia Takes One Point From Portugal

The reigning European champions, Portugal, couldn’t win for the second time in a row, and they lost Cristiano Ronaldo, who injured his hamstring against Serbia. Meanwhile, the English national team opened the game against Montenegro very bad, but finished it with style.  The world champions France was very convincing against Iceland.

England Hammers Montenegro

Albion was behind after hosts’ opener in the 17th minute. For one brief moment, everything looked as if Montenegro has control of the things on the field. But that was just one moment. English hurricane started after half an hour, when Michael Keane tied the result. Ross Barkley brought the lead to the guests nine minutes after, and increased it with another goal, in the second half.

The main weapon of England’s team Harry Kane added another score to his account, and Raheem Sterling set the final result 10 minutes before the end, 1-5. It was a rhapsody for Garreth Southgate’s boys in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro.

In the second game of Group A, Kosovo and Bulgaria played 1-1.

England is first in this assembly with 6 points, Bulgaria has 2, Kosovo and Montenegro 1 each, while the Czech Republic doesn’t have any.

Ronaldo’s Injury Disrupts Portugal

After Ukraine, Serbia also took home one point from Portugal. After one very dynamic and interesting game, we didn’t see any winners, 1-1. Serbia got the lead in the 8th minutes after Dusan Tadic converted a penalty, and Danilo equalized in the 42nd minute, with a beauty from some 25 yards.

In the meantime, Ronaldo had to leave the game because of his hamstring, and the Portuguese team lost their best player. The degree of the injury is still not known, and Juventus fans are terrified with the fact that he might miss Champions League games in two weeks time.

The game was marked with several huge mistakes of the Polish referee Marciniak. He didn’t award a penalty to the hosts, after a blatant handball of one of the defenders in the box. But previously, he didn’t show a red card to Pepe, whose savage start on Tadic could have easily broken the leg of Ajax’s player.

Portugal had more chances, and sometimes they just lacked luck, while Serbia threatened from counter-attacks on several occasions.

In other game of the Group B, Ukraine defeated Luxembourg on the road after Gerson Rodrigues scored an own goal just a few seconds before the end. It was 1-2 for the guests who simply didn’t deserve this victory, that is for sure.

France Looking Good

For the French team, there weren’t any troubles against Iceland, 4-0. Umtiti, Giroud, Mbappe, and Griezmann all scored one goal and taught the Vikings a lesson they won’t forget any time soon.

The Gauls were all over the place, and didn’t allow a chance for the guests, while on the other hand, continuously pressuring the rival. They indeed justified the label of the best team in the world last night, because handling one of the thoughest defenses in the world like that isn’t easy at all.

Turkey played the opening game of group H and defeated Moldova 4-0, while Albania posted a win in Andora, 0-3.
