Fantasy Baseball Positional Rankings: First Base

The first base position is absolutely loaded with talent. You can get a productive player either in the first round or as late as the tenth and not have to sweat. Let’s take a look at my top ten and their average draft position.

Full disclosure, when posting my average draft pick (or ADP) I utilize Fantrax player rankings. Fantrax provides not only the deepest player pools but has the largest amount of mock drafts going on at any single given time. So without further ado, let’s get into my inaugural first basemen rankings for the 2022 MLB Season.

Joey Votto sneaks into the top ten, at thirty-either years old. Despite his age, Votto is projected to only miss thirteen games all season. Couple that information with the fact that he hits for power and average, Votto could be a great late-round pickup, or insurance if you end up not prioritizing the first base position.

2021 Season

  • Age: 34
  • Games (G): 152

The second oldest in the top ten, Jose Abreu continues to turn heads, no matter what age he is. The White Sox are a young team and Abreu’s veteran presence could really help put the team over the hump. Look for Aberu to continue to mash the ball when the 2022 season starts.

8. CJ Cron, Colorado Rockies

2021 Season

  • Age: 31
  • Games (G): 142
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 547

CJ Cron cracks the top ten for the first time in his career. After a great 2021 season, Cron looks to continue his success in 2022. The Colorado air could help boost Cron’s numbers while playing at home, but look for Cron to consistently put up great numbers no matter where he is playing.

7. Kris Bryant, Free Agent

2021 Season

  • Age: 29
  • Games (G): 144
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 586

Kris Bryant can play first, second, third, and all three outfield positions. Depending on where he ends up, he is in play for a designated hitter position as well, giving him even more value. Bryant is one of those players that I want on my team this season, especially for the eligibility at so many different positions.

6. Pete Alonso, New York Mets

2021 Season

  • Age:25
  • Games (G): 152

2022 Season (Projected)

  • Age: 26
  • Games (G): 150
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 649
  • Runs Scored (R):
  • Home Runs (HR): 42

Just outside the top five sits Pete Alonso. Everyone knows Alonso for the vibes that he put out while mashing home runs at last season’s home run derby. Alonso brings that energy to the field every day. Look for the Mets offense to truly revolve around the fourth year first basemen in 2022.

5. Max Muncy, Los Angeles Dodgers

2021 Season

  • Age:30
  • Games (G): 144
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 592

  • Slugging Percentage (SLG): .490
  • Weighted On Base Average (wOBA): .368

Max Muncy’s playing time might be slightly diminished this season, but that doesn’t keep him out of my top five. Not only is Muncy one of the best at the first base position, but he should also have eligibility at second base as well, giving him even more upside in a long season.

4. Paul Goldschmidt, St. Louis Cardinals

2021 Season

  • Age:33
  • Games (G): 158
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 679
  • Runs Scored (R): 102

  • Weighted On Base Average (wOBA): .373
  • Weighted Runs Created Plus (WRC+): 138

  • Age: 34
  • Games (G): 150
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 675
  • Runs Scored (R): 99
  • Home Runs (HR): 30
  • Runs Batted In (RBI): 87

  • Slugging Percentage (SLG): .489

If I had to guess I would put Paul Goldschmidt as a much older player than he truly is. He had a great tenure in Arizona and has been nothing short of an asset to the Cardinals since the trade. Goldschmidt is going to put up great numbers day in and day out and like the others in the top five, projected to be out there every day.

3. Matt Olson, Oakland Athletics

2021 Season

  • Age: 27
  • Games (G): 156
  • Plate Appearances (PA): 673
  • Runs Scored (R): 101

Matt Olson is another one of those guys who you expect to play every day. You get much more consistency out of your first base position just for the sheer fact that it’s not as grueling as the catcher position. If you prioritize pitching in the early rounds Olson should be there late third round, early fourth round for the taking.

2. Freddie Freeman, Free Agent

Freddie Freeman is the definition of consistency. I’m looking, once the players and league come to an agreement, for Freeman to rejoin the World Champion Atlanta Braves. Freeman is an easy second-round pickup. You know exactly what you’re going to get with Freeman, especially his drive every day.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. should have won the American League MVP last season if it weren’t for the phenom of Ohtani. Look for Guerrero Jr. to do even more than he did last season and possibly push even harder for that MVP Trophy this season. If you are in the middle of your draft and Guerrero Jr. is there, take him, you don’t be disappointed.

Conclusion

There are absolute studs all over the top ten first basemen. Not only are these players eligible for the first base position but a lot of them have the ability to play multiple positions. Let’s take in the first base rankings whie we wait for the second base rankings to come out next week.

I’m Brian Handzel. I’m a huge baseball fan. On any given night you can catch me watching a game, whether it is MLB, MiLB, College, or local summer leagues. As my wife says, I’m obsessed with the game. I’m even a credentialed media member for the Syracuse Mets, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. When I’m not watching baseball I’m spending time with my wife and two children, and secretly trying to get them to enjoy the game as well.
