The Grade 1 is one of the most prestigious races on the calendar, but only one horse has claimed success in the Grand Slam of Racing. American Pharoah made history with success in the Classic in 2015, capping off a memorable season that also included wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. Tiznow is the only two-time winner of the race, while Jerry Bailey and Chris McCarron are tied for the most wins as jockey. Bob Baffert is the most successful trainer with four wins.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic often features some of the biggest names in the sport. This year’s race will once again boast a talented field, and trends could help pinpoint the most victor in the massive Grade 1.

  • No favorite has won the Classic since American Pharoah in 2015
  • All ten previous winners have won at least three times on the dirt
  • Every winner in the previous ten years has won at least once in Grade 1 company, while they also finished in the first three on their previous start.

Breeders’ Cup Classic 2022 Leading Contenders

  • Odds: -200
  • Trainer: John Sadler
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 128

There is a growing sense that we could witness something special at Keeneland this year, as Flightline bids to extend his unbeaten record on track. Any fear that the four-year-old wouldn’t be able to compete over an extended distance was routinely cast aside in the G1 Pacific Classic on his previous start, battering the field by a stunning 19-length margin. That was a sensational showing at Del Mar.

Country Grammer could be the yardstick for the Classic this year. On that day, Flightline beat the Baffert horse by 19 lengths, but he had previously beaten Life is Good by a commanding margin in Meydan. It could be a matter of how far Flighline wins by.

Life Is Good

  • Odds: +450
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 125

Given how short Flightline is in the betting, there is value elsewhere in the market. Life Is Good is currently the second choice in the betting, and is a very good price given that he is a multiple-time Grade 1 winner. He was excellent in the G1 Whitney Stakes earlier in the year, reaching a rating of 125.

However, he will need to bounce back to form and be much better than he was on his previous start when landing the G1 Woodward. His career record is extremely strong, having won nine from eleven, but his underwhelming run in the G1 Dubai World Cup could be enough of a reason to take him on.

  • Odds: +550
  • Trainer: Steven Asmussen
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 111

This year’s three-year-old class is represented by Epicenter in the betting. The runner for Steve Asmussen finished second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, and has finished in the top two on all seven starts this season. He finally landed Grade 1 success on his previous start, coming out on top in the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

While he is extremely consistent on track, the figures do give him a lot to do. In truth, Taiba is a much more interesting price for the Classic this year, and I would be very happy to go against the Derby runner-up.

One To Watch

Given how short Flightline is in the betting, it could be worth finding a selection to play underneath. I really like the chances of Hot Rod Charlie chasing home the commanding favorite, and the four-year-old always ensures you get your money’s worth.

He finished ahead of Life Is Good in the G1 Dubai World Cup in March, and has since followed that up with victory in the G2 Lukas Classic at Churchill Downs. Hot Rod Charlie also boasts course experience, having finished second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2020.

Free Horse Racing Picks: Breeders’ Cup Classic 2022 Pick and Prediction

Flightline looks almost unopposable in the betting, and it could be worth a bet on the four-year-old to win by at least four lengths. Hot Rod Charlie is my each-way selection, and I expect another big run from the four-year-old after finishing fourth in the race 12 months ago.
