Free Horse Racing Picks: Breeders’ Cup Distaff 2022 Preview, Odds, Trends & Pick

  • One of the most exciting races at the Breeders’ Cup this year comes in the form of the Distaff
  • Malathaat, Nest and Clairiere will all be involved in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff this year

There are few races that I am looking forward to more than the Breeders’ Cup Distaff this year. Multiple Grade 1 winners will be squaring off in the race this year, including Nest, Malathaat, and Clairiere. Kentucky Oaks victor Secret Oath will also be involved in one of the most competitive Distaffs that we have seen in recent memory.

Recent Winners & Records

The Breeders’ Cup Distaff has been staged annually since 1984. This race was won by huge outsider Marche Lorraine in 2021, for trainer Yoshito Yahagi. Only four horses have won this race on two occasions, including Bayakoa, Royal Delta, Beholder, and Monomoy Girl. William Mott is the most successful trainer with five victories, which is the same number of wins recorded by jockey Mike Smith.

The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is one of the most competitive races on the card at the event this year. Therefore, extra attention should be paid to the trends that could help whittle down the field and help locate the most likely winner.

  • Only one favorite has won this race since 2014 (Monomoy Girl- 2020)
  • Look out for runners that have recorded 2-5 wins this season
  • Last ten winners have all run in races with at least four runners, and a maximum of eight on their previous start
  • Only one three-year-old has won this race in the previous seven editions

Breeders’ Cup Distaff 2022 Leading Contenders

  • Odds: +150
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 110

Nest is a very short favorite for the Distaff this year, despite having never previously taken on horses over the age of the three. She was a winner at Belmont at the Big A on her previous start, claiming victory with a rating of 97 in the G2 Beldame Stakes.

However, her best victories were recorded at Saratoga, having landed the G1 Alabama Stakes and G1 Coaching Club American Oaks. She has also achieved previous success at Keeneland, having landed the G1 Ashland Stakes in April. Her record is incredibly consistent, as she has finished in the top three on all ten career starts, winning on seven occasions.

  • Odds: +300
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 113

Todd Pletcher has an incredibly strong hand for the Distaff this year, with last year’s Kentucky Oaks victor Malathaat second choice in the betting. This four-year-old stormed back to winning ways in Grade 1 company last time out, as she landed the G1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland with a rating of 108.

Like Nest, she has failed to finish outside the first three in 13 career efforts, which includes a third-place finish in the Distaff last year. Malathaat has proven experience at Keeneland, having landed the Spinster and Ashland since the start of 2021, and her performance last time out signals that she is more than ready for this clash.

  • Odds: +600
  • Trainer: Steven Asmussen
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 111

A horse that could upset the pre-race top selections in the betting may be Society. The three-year-old has been progressing very nicely throughout the season, having landed victories in back-to-back stakes races coming into the Distaff. She still has form to find on Nest, as Society finished back in fourth in the G1 Coaching Club back in July.

However, since then, she has won the G3 Charles Town Oaks and G1 Cotillion Stakes. The latest of those scored a speed rating of 111. But, I would be far more interested in siding with the likes of Clairiere and Search Results in the race.

One To Watch

There are a number of contenders to watch out for behind the top three in the betting, including Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath. However, she has been well beaten by Nest since claiming victory at Churchill Downs. Clairiere is easily the most interesting selection at a price, as the Steven Asmussen runner beat Malathaat in both the G1 Ogden Phipps and G2 Shuvee Stakes.

However, she was slightly underwhelming in the G1 Personal Ensign, as she finished nine lengths behind Malathaat. Search Results followed Malathaat home in that Grade 1, ending just half a length behind the four-year-old. The Chad Brown runner is extremely talented, but she is yet to really hold much of a threat against the proven stars in this division.

Free Horse Racing Picks: Breeders’ Cup Distaff 2022 Pick and Prediction

This should be a thrilling renewal of the Distaff. I am more than happy to take on Nest after her previous performance, and this could be the year that Malathaat finally lands the big one. Her performance at Keeneland was extremely exciting, and she is one of the stars that could capture the imagination at the Breeders’ Cup this year.
