Only two horses have recorded multiple wins in the Sprint, with Midnight Lute and Roy H both winning on two occasions.

This Grade 1 has thrown up some shocking results previously, which means that the trends should be examined before making a wager. Some of the key trends to consider for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint can be found below.

  • Only two winning favorites in the previous eight editions of the race.
  • Higher draws have performed better in recent years, with four of the previous five winners drawn 5+.
  • All previous ten winners have won between 2-6 times and were beaten by no more than three lengths on their previous start.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint 2022 Leading Contenders

Jackie’s Warrior

  • Odds: +162
  • Trainer: Steven Asmussen
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 113

Five-time Grade 1 winner Jackie’s Warrior will make his final start on the track in the Sprint before he heads to stud. The four-year-olds record on track is staggering, as he has won 12 times from 17 starts under rules, with eleven victories coming in stakes company.

Six furlongs is certainly his best trip, with his only defeat over the distance coming last year in this race. On that occasion, he finished four lengths behind Aloha West, despite being sent off at odds-on. He has questions to answer in the race this year, as he was beaten by Cody’s Wish in the G1 Forego at Saratoga on his previous start over seven furlongs.

Jack Christopher

  • Odds: +187
  • Trainer: Chad Brown
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 112

Jack Christopher still holds two entries for the Breeders’ Cup this year, and the Sprint is one of those. I’m a huge fan of this three-year-old, as he has won five from six career starts.

His only defeat came in the G1 Haskell in July, but he bounced back with a stunning victory over seven furlongs in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, reaching a career-best rating of 112. However, no three-year-old has won this race since 2016, and I would much rather fancy his chances over a mile in the Dirt Mile at Keeneland.

  • Odds: +700
  • Trainer: Steven Asmussen
  • Best Equibase Figure 2022: 110

Gunite is a very big-priced third favorite in the betting for the Sprint, but he boasts something that very few other contenders can claim. The three-year-old was a winner at Keeneland on his previous start, as he claimed success over seven furlongs in the Perryville Stakes by three lengths from Conagher.

He was also second to Jack Christopher in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial and looks to make a bold bid this year. He is incredibly consistent, having won four from six this term, with his only defeats seeing him finish second. His lowest recorded figure this term was 98 on seasonal reappearance, but the 110 recorded last time out highlights that he could still be improving.

One To Watch

I’m always drawn to the Wesley Ward sprinters, and they often present value in the market. Kimari looks like a decent selection for the Sprint this year at a bigger price. The five-year-old was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last year, but has quickly settled to life on the dirt this term.

She was a fine third in the G1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in April, and posted a figure of 104 when beating Lady Rocket at Belmont at the Big A in the G2 Gallant Bloom Stakes in late September.

Free Horse Racing Picks: Breeders’ Cup Sprint 2022 Pick and Prediction

Jackie’s Warrior looks to be the one to beat in the race this year, as he bids to avenge the defeat suffered last year. I think it could be the perfect swansong for the talented star, but Kimari could prove to be her biggest danger if she gets a favorable draw.
