Kentucky Derby 2021 Preview

History & Previous Winners

The Run for the Roses is the most prestigious of horse races in the United States, with only the Breeders’ Cup races classed as more prestigious than the Kentucky Derby. The race has taken place on the first weekend in May, and has served as the first leg of the Triple Crown races since 1875. Last year, it took place later in the season due to COVID-19. However, it is back to its usual date in May.

The Grade 1 takes place over 1 ¼ miles and is competed on dirt. Secretariat remains the holder of the speed record, as he completed the Kentucky Derby in 1:59.40 when he won the prestigious race in 1973. Bob Baffert has trained the most winners in the history of this race, and he will be looking for a seventh winner after claiming success with Authentic last year.

Essential Quality has been the market leader since the betting was opened for the race. The three-year-old will be defending his perfect record at Churchill Downs this weekend, as he has won on all five career starts to date. He has beaten three contenders that will be lining up for the race on Saturday, including Hot Rod Charlie, who he beat in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Essential Quality also comes into this race after having won the illustrious Blue Grass Stakes last time out. However, he will be looking to become the first winner to come from post 14 since Back in 1961.

Rock Your World is one of the most durable contenders that will be on display this weekend, as he has won on both grass and turf this season. Both victories on dirt have come against Medina Spirit, and it would be hard to see that form being reversed.

Known Agenda could be the Todd Pletcher runner that has gone under the radar slightly, as he has won both of his last two, which includes the Grade 1 Florida Derby. Meanwhile, Highly Motivated put in a strong display against Essential Quality last time out, and shouldn’t be completely discounted.

Kentucky Derby 2021 Prediction

Who will win the 2021 Kentucky Derby:

We feel as if there is enough form from some of the other runners to look past Essential Quality for the Grade 1. The conditions will suit both Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie this weekend, Mandaloun has run in big fields throughout his career, and could be a place pick. Meanwhile, Hot Rod Charlie is the horse we fancy to win the Kentucky Derby.

The three-year-old was excellent last time out when winning at Fair Grounds, and was just three-quarters of a length behind Essential Quality at the Breeders’ Cup. We are also confident of a good run from King Fury. He will start in post 16, which has a success rate of 8.3% in the Kentucky Derby. If he can replicate his Lexington Stakes form, then he will be a contender at a higher price.

Kentucky Derby Picks:

  • Mandaloun (Place)
  • Hot Rod Charlie (Win)
  • King Fury (Each-Way)
