- The Wild are 2-3 at home this year
- The Avalanche are 3-2 on the road
- Colorado on a hot streak winning four out of their last five
I didn’t expect the last matchup on Friday with these teams to be as big of a blowout as it was. The Avalanche played like true Stanley Cup contenders against a Wild team that has been surprising some people so far with a 5-4 record despite trading away some key pieces in their lineup this past offseason.
However, consistent scoring led to the Avalanche just overwhelming the Wild on the road beating them 5-1. The game’s first two goals were scored in the first seven minutes as it was tied 1-1 in the blink of an eye but then the Avalanche notched four unanswered the rest of the game allowing them to cruise to an easy win. I expect a closer contest on Sunday, but my money is still on Colorado.

Avalanche Getting Hot
Despite being outhit 21-5 on Friday Colorado still got off the shots they needed to in order to win, and maybe that’s the key to their whole offense. They won’t surprise you or intimidate you with any defense but they do well enough to get by with the shots they get on net. This is a team that is averaging over 30 a game on goaltenders and they make them pay by averaging almost four a game.
This team has scoring threats around the corner but Center Nathan Mckinnon has been the go-to man for them his 10 assists and two goals have had him tally a crazy 12 points. But this team as a whole has three players in double figure point totals and two others are just two points away from joining them. Solid goaltending and this offensive attack have them ready for a deep playoff run.
Wild Better than Expected
This is a team that has had trouble scoring consistently but that could be do to their penalty minutes. Already with just nine games into the season, they have 102 penalty minutes, giving not only their opponents better chances to score but limiting their own offensive attack as well. Still, they are averaging over 30 shots a game and their average goal total matches their total given up as well. So despite them giving up all those penalties they still have a winning record and aren’t even playing their best hockey yet.
Leading the way for Minnesota has been Jordan Greenway, the 23-year-old is only in his second year but already is top on the team in points thanks to one goal and seven assists which almost averages out to a point a game. The biggest thing for the Wild will be finding just more explosive ways to score; many of their players already have notched at least one point on the year meaning they have a deep bench but lack a go-to person for lighting the lamp.
Avalanche vs Wild Prediction
Who wins NHL tonight between Avalanche vs Wild:
Like I said this game will be closer than last time but it’s just hard to pick against Colorado right now as they are too talented offensively to really lose a lead against a team like Minnesota who typically doesn’t have someone to grab the goals they need. They are a tough gritty team who will play the Avalanche a lot closer than last game but I don’t see them winning Sunday if they go down by more than one goal.
