Lightning Endure Difficult Pre-Season
It wasn’t meant to be for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, as their two-year hold on the prestigious honor finally ended. However, they excelled throughout their run in the playoffs, before finally losing in game six of the finals against the Colorado Avalanche. This season, their aim will be to get back into the championship game and regain the Stanley Cup.
However, things haven’t exactly gone smoothly for the Lightning throughout pre-season, as they have played three fixtures to this point, and have lost on all three occasions. So far in pre-season, Tampa has conceded a staggering 14 goals and has scored just twice. Their latest defeat was a 7-1 humbling on the road against the Nashville Predators. However, they will have the opportunity to build momentum before opening night as they face the Florida Panthers on Thursday and Saturday.
Rangers Still Building
We were very keen on the chances of the New York Rangers last season, but they eventually were eliminated in the Conference finals by the Tampa Bay Lightning after six games. However, there’s no denying that they are moving in the right direction, as they reached that stage for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The mentality within the squad also looks strong, as they came back from a 3-1 deficit in a playoff match for just the third time in franchise history in their opening round clash against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pre-season has gone slightly better from a Rangers standpoint, as they have won two of the four games that they have played to this point. However, they face the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders to finish off pre-season before this opening night match at Madison Square Garden.
Head To Head Record
The Lightning has won each of the previous four games between the sides, with all meetings coming during the playoffs last term. In the regular season, the Rangers have won their previous three matches against the Lightning, including a 4-0 win in this exact fixture in January.
Lightning vs Rangers Pick and Prediction
It has been a very slow start to the season for the Lightning, which is evident by their pre-season record. We expect the Rangers to get off to a fast start in this fixture. Furthermore, we could see under six goals, which would have been a winning selection in each of the previous two regular season games between the sides.
