Race Preview
The Gun Runner Stakes is a wide-open end to the 2022 section of the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The betting only highlights how open this race between horses aged two will be on Monday, and as expected, cases can be made for every runner in the field.
Jace’s Road is expected to take top-choice in the betting for trainer Brad Cox. The two-year-old was very unfortunate on his previous start, as he never ran to his full potential after a mishap at the start of the G3 Street Sense; eventually finishing eighth. However, he remains a top contender if back to the form he was on his first two starts, which included a win at Ellis Park with a speed rating of 88. He also finished third in the G3 Iroquois.

Kenneth McPeek hands Hayes Strike a seventh career start this weekend, but he is winless since breaking his maiden at Ellis Park in August. Since then, he finished fourth in the G3 Iroquois, and was second in the G2 Street Sense. Confidence certainly can be taken from his latest effort, as he finished third in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. But, the ratings do leave him with a bit to find.
Andthewinneris is an extremely interesting contender in this field on Monday, as he returns to the dirt for the first time since finishing third in the Bashford Manor in July. Since then, he won the G2 Bourbon on the Turf at Keeneland over 1 1/16 miles, and was seventh in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. A return to the dirt is a fascinating angle.
Old Alliance and Mazing Mark are both outsiders in this field, but both have the speed required down the final stretch to have a say in the Gun Runner. The latter would be the pick of the outsiders after landing the Jean Lafitte in impressive fashion last month.
Gun Runner Stakes Prediction
This wide-open contest could go the way of any of the two-year-olds involved. However, a chance is taken on the Mark Casse-trained Determinedly. Casse regularly runs contenders that are in form, and this two-year-old is no different. He was excellent over seven furlongs at Churchill Downs last month, reaching a speed rating of 89 as he won going away. Determinedly also scored a rating of 92 in November when chasing home the incredibly talented Arabian Knight over seven furlongs at Keeneland.
