Breeders’ Cup Turf Contenders

  • Odds: +350
  • Trainer: John & Thady Gosden

Globe-trotting Mishriff has enjoyed a fantastic season in 2021, and a shot at the Breeders’ Cup Turf looks very likely to be on the agenda. The four-year-old started the season with wins overseas, with a Group 1 success in the Dubai Sheema Classic certainly capturing the imagination.

He was a close second behind Epsom Derby winner Adayar in the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July, but finally got a first UK Group 1 when winning the Juddmonte International Stakes by six lengths from Alenquer.

  • Odds: +400
  • Trainer: Dermot Weld

Tarnawa will be looking to become the first back-to-back winner in ten years. The five-year-old made his one and only start so far this season at Leopardstown, as he won the Group 3 Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes by six and a half lengths from Silence Please. It looks a slightly harder task for him than it did last year, but there’s no denying that the ability is certainly there.

  • Odds: +400
  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Snowfall is the most eye-catching name in the betting for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, as she looks to become only the second filly to win this race. Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race is stunning, as he has had the winner on six occasions.

Snowfall’s form as a three-year-old this term has been simply staggering, winning on all four starts. Her campaign started with victory in the Group 3 Musidora, before adding Group 1s in the form of the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. She is a superstar and could take all the beating if she heads to Del Mar.

  • Odds: +700
  • Trainer: Charlie Appleby

Charlie Appleby and Godolphin have already teamed up for some huge victories this season, but success in the Breeders’ Cup Turf would seal potentially their best-ever season. Epsom Derby hero joined elite company by winning the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes to book his spot in this race, as he won the Group 1 by a length and three-quarters from Mishriff.

If he heads to the Breeders’ Cup he could be the first to achieve a Derby-Turf double since high Chaparral in 2002. However, time will tell whether the Breeders’ Cup or the Arc will be the main aim towards the end of the season.

One To Watch

Japan could tick a lot of boxes when it comes to the Breeders’ Cup Turf at the end of the season, and is currently priced as high as +1200. The five-year-old traveled to the United States for the G1 Sword Dancer at the end of August and was narrowly beaten on the line by a neck by Gufo. This classy horse for Aidan O’Brien could yet return to the States with the Breeders’ Cup in mind, and has a fine back catalog of form that could see him have a good chance.
