Iga Swiatek Moving to the WTA #1 After Miami Open
- Iga Swiatek moving to the #1 position in the WTA Rankings on Monday
- Swiatek is getting there thanks to Ash Barty’s decision to retire
- By winning the 2022 Miami Open, Swiatek would cement her #1 spot
After beating Viktorija Golubic last night (6-2, 6-0) at the 2022 Miami Open, Iga Swiatek has officially secured the #1 position in the WTA Rankings. She’ll get there on Monday, regardless of how she does in the remainder of the tournament.
She is getting to the summit of the WTA List after Ash Barty, who previously held that spot, announced her retirement.
By getting to the #1 position, the 20-year-old will become the first Polish player in history to achieve such a feat.
Swiatek Favored to Win the 2022 Miami Open
With a win over Golubic on Friday evening, Swiatek got herself to the Round of 32 of the 2022 Miami Open. On Sunday, March 27, she’s taking on unseeded Madison Brengle in what’s supposed to be an easy match for Swiatek. Evidence of this is that tennis sportsbooks are giving the Vegas odds of -1250 on her winning the match.
Not only is she favored to do well over the weekend, but she’s also the #1 favorite to win the trophy at Hard Rock Stadium next Saturday. Right now, the Vegas odds on Swiatek winning the 2022 Miami Open are somewhere in the ballpark of +225.
If she does it, she’ll receive $1,000,000 in prizes, along with 1,000 ranking points. Knowing that she took just 65 points in the last year’s tournament, a win would add an additional 935 points to her current tally of 5,776.
In turn, it would mean that no one would be able to throw her off the #1 spot in the WTA rankings for at least a couple of weeks.
