- The WBA, IBF, and WBO titles are at stake in the Joshua vs Pulev bout.
It’s been confirmed that the Joshua vs Pulev bout will happen this summer. The mandatory bout between the reigning world champion Anthony Joshua and challenger Kubrat Pulev will take place on June 20 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The UK boxer is defending three titles, namely the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles.
Joshua’s First Fight in UK Since 2018
Joshua currently holds three world heavyweight titles which he won back with a win over Andy Ruiz Jr. in their rematch last December in Saudi Arabia. The fight against Pulev is taking place in London, which is the first time Joshua is fighting in his home country since 2018. His previous UK bout happened in September 2018 when he beat Alexander Povetkin.
Joshua and Pulev are going toe-to-toe for the first time in history, although they were supposed to fight back in 2017. The Joshua vs Pulev bout was scheduled to happen in October 2017 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, but had to be concluded due to Pulev’s injury problems. The Bulgarian boxer suffered a shoulder injury while sparring less than two weeks before the scheduled meeting with Joshua, so Carlos Takam had to step up as a replacement.
This summer, Joshua and Pulev are fighting one another as fighters with one career defeat each. Anthony Joshua famously lost to Andy Ruiz Jr. in June 2019 by a knockout. Pulev’s only defeat was also decided by a knockout. It was back in 2015 when Wladimir Klitschko KO-ed the Bulgarian in fifth round.
Since the defeat, Pulev has been in a victorious run, winning eight consequent fights. Boxing sportsbooks, however, don’t believe his run will last for much longer. In fact, many of them have already released their odds for the Joshua vs Pulev bout, making the British pugilist a big favorite. At the moment of writing, the odds on Joshua are as short as -900.
Joshua vs Fury Also to Happen in 2020?
In a recent interview, promoter Eddie Hearn said he is working on brokering an all-British fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. According to the promoter, the bout is very likely to happen by the end of the year.
Still, if it’s going to happen, it’s going to take place after Joshua has taken care of his mandatory fight with Pulev. In addition, Fury will also have to fight another fight before the potential clash with his fellow Englishman.
Tyson Fury beat Deontay Wilder in their rematch last month, thus claiming the WBC heavyweight title. However, according to the deal the Gypsy King has with the Bronze Bomber, the defeated fighter has the right to call for another rematch, which is exactly what Wilder plans to do.
According to promoter Bob Arum, Fury vs Wilder II is going to happen this summer, before the start of the 2020 Olympics.
