Khabib vs Gaethje to Headline UFC 253 in September

  • Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje are to fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship title.
  • The UFC plans to organize the title fight at the Fight Island in September as a part of UFC 253.
  • Online sportsbooks were quick to release the betting odds for the bout.

Last night, the UFC has announced plans to organize several title fights over the course of the next couple of months. The biggest of those is the Khabib vs Gaethje fight, which is supposed to line up in the UFC 235 event.

The plan is for the event to take place in September at UFC’s Fight Island. Although no one can say for certain where (or what) the Fight Island is, the UFC has confirmed it exists. Even more importantly, it was suggested that the Khabib vs Gaethje fight might take place there.

Whoever wins this fight is going to be crowned the UFC Lightweight champion. Khabib comes into the fight as the reigning champ, while Gaethje is the current interim champion.

Gaethje won his interim belt after beating Tony Ferguson but was seen throwing it away. When asked by Joe Rogan why he did that, Gaethje’s answer was: Let’s wait for the real one!

The Road to Khabib vs Gaethje Fight

Khabib Nurmagomedov won the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 223 in April 2018. That’s when he beat Al Iaquinta by unanimous decision.

In October the same year, he was challenged by Conor McGregor, but the Dagestani fighter managed to defend the title. His most recent adventure inside the UFC Octagon happened last September when he beat Dustin Poirier at UFC 242.

He was supposed to go toe-to-toe with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, but that fight ended up canceled. Actually, the fight between Khabib and Ferguson was called off several times before for various reasons. This time, the reason was the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the travel restrictions, Khabib was unable to leave his native Russia.

Justin Gaethje stepped in as Khabib’s replacement. Even though he was a big underdog in that fight, he beat El Cucuy by technical knock-out, thus winning the interim UFC Lightweight Championship.

Justin Gaethje caused Tony Ferguson his first defeat since 2012. He’s now hoping he could break another super-long winning streak. Khabib is without a defeat in his professional career. Or is he?

Gaethje Claims Khabib is Not Undefeated

Officially, Khabib Nurmagomedov holds a record of 28 wins and no defeats in his professional MMA career. Still, his next opponent thinks that’s not true. According to Justin Gaethje, Khabib lost a fight eight years ago.

What Gaethje believes to be Khabib’s defeat is the 2012 fight with Gleison Tibau. The Brazilian fighter lost to Khabib by unanimous decision in what was Khabib’s second UFC fight. Before that fight, he took part in UFC on FX: Belfort vs Bisping.
