Kobe-Shaq Feud Gets Another Round

The Kobe-Shaq feud was seemingly re-ignited when Kobe Bryant said that if Shaquille O’Neal had his work ethic he would be the greatest of all time.

Kobe-Shaq Feud is Nothing New

For better context as to how long this Kobe-Shaq feud has been going on, it has its own Wikipedia page. There are so many reasons why they were never able to get along. It has to be said that this chapter in their feud is very tame compared to previous rounds.

In fact, Kobe Bryant has already said that he has nothing but love for Shaq and that the media is trying to push this narrative. With that being said, he had to have known his comments were going to annoy Shaq to some extent.

Let’s be clear about two things. First of all, Kobe Bryant is complementing Shaq here. He is saying that if Shaq worked harder that he would be considered the best player of all time. With that in mind, it’s hard to deny that Shaq would often start the season out of shape. Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest competitors in NBA history. To Kobe, that’s called being lazy.

Why Would Shaq Take Offense?

Essentially Kobe is implying that Shaq was lazy. While that probably isn’t true, it’s not hard to see how Shaq could interpret it that way. That’s where this entire situation gets a bit tricky. The Kobe-Shaq feud has had so many chapters that people will always look for deeper meaning behind the statements that the two make about each other.

Kobe was very specific. He said if Shaq had HIS (Kobe Bryant’s) work ethic, he would have been the greatest of all time. Well how many players have Kobe’s work ethic? The answer to that question is very few. On top of that, if you asked Shaq the direct question “Did you work as hard as Kobe Bryant?”, there’s no possible way he would say yes. He knows what Kobe Bryant said is actually very true. The real problem is Shaq will not let Kobe take even the slightest shot at his legacy.

Shaquille O’Neal Fires Back at Kobe

Shaq of course responded to what Kobe Bryant had to say:

That’s a very typical response from the big man who is no stranger to feuding on social media. He doesn’t back down from a fight and he was quick to remind Kobe about his own role in some of their playoff failures. In the end, the two aren’t really feuding again. Kobe said something and Shaq responded the way he usually does.

Bryant said that there is no more Kobe-Shaq feud and he was partially telling the truth. They aren’t fighting right now. In fact, Shaq took the opportunity to throw shade at a player he and Kobe mutually dislike, Dwight Howard.

And there you have it. The Kobe-Shaq feud that they both say doesn’t exist is put to rest for now. The two will never be close friends. If anything, they now share a mutual respect for what they were able to accomplish as teammates despite their inability to get along. They also must wonder what could have been which is part of the reason why the feud will never die completely.
