Just as when the Los Angeles Angels are starting to find their groove, the Milwaukee Brewers come to threaten their budding momentum. On Monday (10:07 PM EST), the Angels and Brewers will begin their three-game interleague series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.
The Angels, who lost six of their first seven games (including five straight defeats), have now won their last three assignments thanks to solid pitching and much more improved batting.
On the other hand, the Brewers have been steamrolling all over the league since Opening Day. They have racked up eight wins in their first 10 games and boasted one of the most potent offenses in Major League Baseball.
The Angels will be sending their right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill to the mound. The 31-year-old Cahill is still looking for his first win of the season after two futile starts. The Brewers, meanwhile, will be leaning on Jhoulys Chacin, who is so far 2-0 with a 4.22 ERA and 13 strikeouts. The Los Angeles Angels are +1.5 points underdog against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Los Angeles Angels Team Preview
After they dropped Game 1 of their recent series with the Rangers, the Angels steadily picked things up on defense in the next three games in which their pitchers allowed just four runs over that stretch.
More positive developments happened in the series finale with their offense finally producing their highest output of the season. Mike Trout homered for a fourth consecutive game, while Brian Goodwin crushed another in the Angels’ 7-2 win.
The victory couldn’t be bigger for the morale of the team as they move into a tough stretch of their regular-season schedule. The Angels will host the Brewers over the next three games before another six-game road trip against the Chicago Cubs and the Rangers.
The Milwaukee Brewers Team Preview
To no one’s surprise, the Brewers are among the top teams in baseball entering the second week of the season. In fact, Milwaukee is just behind the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers in ESPN’s recent power rankings.
Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich already belted five homers and 13 RBIs with a batting average of .361. Lorenzo Cain is so far the clubhouse leader in batting efficiency, sporting a .368 BA, .432 OBP and .553 SLG.
On the mound, the Brewers aren’t quite there to an elite level but Josh Hader has been phenomenal for his team. The 25-year-old relief pitcher has been virtually unhittable, allowing a hit and a walk with 13 strikeouts over 7.2 innings.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Milwaukee Brewers Betting Pick
The Brewers are the overwhelming favorite entering this three-game interleague play but don’t count out another Angels’ explosion, especially now that Trout (.392 with five homers and 13 RBIs) is finding his range at the plate.
And while Cahill was unlucky in his last two starts, he might have a bit of an edge against the Brewers since he hasn’t conceded a homer in his career against nine of their batters, including Yelich, Ryan Braun and Mike Moustakas.
The Brewers will be once again a handful with their long-ball offense and Chacin’s variation of pitchers. Still, I feel the Angels can continue their good run as long as they keep their fielding defense tight. Bet the Los Angeles Angels +1.5 points underdog against the Milwaukee Brewers.
