There was little doubt that LSU would beat Vanderbilt but a Tennessee loss to Auburn handed them their first outright SEC regular season title since 2009.
LSU Coach Will Wade Suspended Indefinitely
Despite not having their head coach on the sideline, LSU was able to capture its first SEC regular season title in a decade. It didn’t come as much of a surprise considering the quality of their opponent but the fact the Tennessee lost made the win that much sweeter. As for their head coach Will Wade, he won’t be around for the SEC tournament and considering the seriousness of the charges against him, he probably won’t be back for the NCAA tournament either. In case you aren’t up to speed on why exactly coach Wade is suspended indefinitely, he was heard talking about waiting for a middleman to accept his “offer” for freshman guard Javonte Smart. This conversation took place in 2017 while Smart was still in high school. Unfortunately for Will Wade, the call was intercepted by the FBI. Although he didn’t specifically say an amount or even mention money, he did say that he thought his “offer” hadn’t been accepted yet because the middleman “wanted a bigger piece of the pie”. He also mentioned that the “offer” was “tilted” more towards Smith and his mother. It’s too early to determine what will happen to Wade but it’s safe to say he won’t be back on the sidelines in the near future.
Co-Champions in Almost All of the Power Conferences
The SEC was the only power conference with an outright champion which we here at Vegasodds.com pointed out would be almost inevitable. LSU owes Auburn a huge thank you for beating Tennessee to give them sole possession of the SEC crown. The Volunteers late season collapse has seen them go from the number one team in the country to the number 3 seed in the SEC tournament. Over in the Big 12, Texas Tech and Kansas St are co-champions which might sound strange because Kansas usually wins every year. This season they will have to settle for the number 3 seed in the conference tournament and will face Texas on Thursday. The winner of that game would potentially face Texas Tech in the semi final.
In the Big Ten Michigan St beat Michigan in convincing fashion at home to take a share of the Big 10 regular season title with Purdue. Michigan St gets the number one seed in the conference tournament even though they split their regular season meetings with Purdue. For that reason, the tie-breaker scenario involves both teams record against the next highest seed which is Michigan. The Spartans beat Michigan twice while Purdue lost to them in their only meeting this season. Things are much less complicated in the ACC where Virginia and North Carolina shared the conference regular season title. In their only regular season matchup, Virginia beat North Carolina to break the tie. As for Duke, coach Krzyzewski announced that Zion Williamson would return to full contact 5 on 5 practices on Monday. He expects to have him back in the lineup on Thursday when Duke play their first game in the ACC tournament.
