Game Preview

New York is coming off their first 100-win season in 34 years, having finished 101-61. Unfortunately, they lost in the Wild Card round of the NL playoffs, gaining little to show for their success. The Mets will attempt to build on that success from last season and make a deeper postseason run, but will have to do so without ace pitcher Jacob DeGrom, who joined the Texas Rangers this offseason.

The Marlins posted their 12th straight sub-80 win season in 2022, having only finishing over .500 once in that span during the shortened 2020 season. Miami has made some marginal improvements over the last few years, but has yet to turn it into any sustained success. They do have an absolute ace in Sandy Alcántara, who unanimously won last season’s NL CY Young award.

Prediction

Last season, these two teams finished very far apart, with the Mets winning 101 games to the Marlins’ 69. I expect the Mets to again be the better team, but by a much more narrow margin. I see New York finishing this year 89-73, and Miami going 76-86. To start the year, the Mets always seem to struggle. They’re also facing Sandy Alcántara with 38-year-old Max Scherzer. They’ll likely lose this one.
