MI Defeat KKR and SRH Qualify for IPL Playoffs

Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final league match to solve the whodunit that was the IPL playoffs this season. Till the last match, the top spot in the league stage was not decided. The fourth qualifying team to the playoffs was not decided either.

The Mumbai side produced their A game for the match and comfortably beat Kolkata Knight Riders by nine wickets, first, to earn the top spot in the league and, second, to oust KKR from the tournament. The win for Mumbai means Kolkata Knight Riders. Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad finished with 12 points apiece. The superior net run rate of Sunrisers helped them sneak in as the fourth team.

Mumbai Indians to Meet Chennai Super Kings

Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals finished on top with 18 points each. MI have  the best net run rate, followed by CSK. In fact, CSK lost their final match against Kings XI Punjab. Had they lost within 14.3 overs, they would have fallen below Delhi Capitals in the net run rate. It did not happen and the stage was set for a sumptuous third clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings in this year’s IPL.

The match will be held in Chennai. Mumbai have won  both their league matches against Chennai. These two teams are the most formidable teams not just in this year’s tournament, but in the IPL history as well. So, there is no scope for an easy prediction. At this stage, it can only be said that Mumbai Indians have a slight edge.

The winner of this match goes directly to the finals. The loser will get one more chance. They will meet the winner of the other playoffs. So, there is every likelihood that Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will meet again in the IPL final, regardless of the result of this match.

Delhi Capitals Take On Sunrisers Hyderabad

In the other playoffs match, Delhi Capitals meet Sunrisers. Capitals are the in-form team. But they do have a tendency to self-destruct unexpectedly. Sunrisers will be eager to trigger the switch. Capitals will start as favorite to win this match. However, the winner of this match will start as the underdog against the loser of the first playoffs.
