- Marlins are 9-20 last 29 as an underdog
- Marlins are 14-37 last 51 road games
- Rays are 43-17 last 60 home games
- Rays are 6-1 last 7 head to head in Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Rays are closing in on an AL East title, with their magic number down to 2 following an 8-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday night. TB is pretty costly as -200 favorites for Saturday’s meeting, and the Marlines weren’t playing horribly with a 4-5 record over their previous 9 games. That was against the Nationals and Pirates though, and one would think the Rays want to get the division clinch and rest for the postseason.

Marlins vs Rays Odds
No Offense for Marlins
Miami didn’t do much on Friday night, managing just 2 hits and never even making an attempt to get things close after falling down 3-0 in the 1st inning. The Marlins also only got 3.0 IP from starter Edward Cabrera, using four relievers to finish out the game.
The good news is that Don Mattingly hopes to not need much of his bullpen in game two with Sandy Alcantara (9-13, 3.05 ERA) on the mound. The Marlins have won 4 of the last 5 Alcantara starts, and he’s completed at least the 7th inning in all four of those victories. That run includes a complete game against the Mets on September 8th in which he struck out 14 batters.
Of course regardless of how well Alcantara pitches, the Marlins are going to need more than 0 runs to win on Saturday. Miami had scored 5+ runs in three of four games prior to Friday’s dud, but are up against a pitcher in Shane McClanahan who is 5-2 over his last 7 decisions.
Rays Getting Close to Popping Champagne
With a win on Saturday and another Red Sox loss to the Yankees, the Rays can clinch their 2nd straight division crown and get recharged for what they hope is also a 2nd consecutive visit to the World Series. Winning the AL East would almost seem inevitable with a magic number of 2 and with 8 to play, so maybe Tampa Bay gets caught looking ahead on Saturday.
Alcantara is a quality pitcher for Miami and the Marlins have some real value as +182 underdogs. The Rays managed just 2 hits against Alcantara on April 1st but still got the 1-0 Opening Day win as -157 favorites. Tampa Bay has hit just .162 vs. the Marlins starter (6 for 37) with Ji-Man Choi having three of those hits.
McClanahan (9-6, 3.51 ERA) goes for the Rays looking for his 6th win in the last 9 starts. The lefty is 6-3 at Tropicana Field this season and has just a 3.00 ERA in September despite being 0-2 so far this month.
MLB Predictions Today:
Who will win tonight’s MLB game:
The Rays are closing in on the AL East title but they might be in a dangerous spot on Saturday night. The Marlins will probably get one win at some point this series, as they’ve gone 8 straight 3-game series’ without getting swept. What better time than with their ace on the bump.
