Event Details & Records
The Cook Out Southern 500 is the final Crown Jewel race on the NASCAR calendar this year. This race has been held annually since 1950, and drivers will compete a total distance of 501.322 miles. A total of 367 laps will be completed during the race, which is made up of 112 laps in each of the first two stages. The final 137 laps make up the final stage.
Since 2015, the race has been held on Labor Day weekend, the oldest superspeedway race has been won a record six times by Jeff Gordon. Hendrick Motorsports are the most successful team, having picked up eleven victories. Meanwhile, the most successful manufacturer is Chevrolet, with 27 victories. The most recent winner of the race was Denny Hamlin, who claimed success for a second time in five years in 2021.
The pressure of the NASCAR playoffs sees the action intensify this weekend. Chase Elliott remains the leader in the standings, but his advantage was cut to 25 points after he could only finish 29th last weekend. Kyle Larson sits fourth in the standings. The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion finished 37th at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 last weekend, as Chevrolet won a race on the calendar for the second weekend running. The shock winner last weekend came in the form of Austin Dillon, with the victory being enough to move him into the crucial 16th spot in the standings.
Joey Logano cut Elliott’s lead in the standings after finishing the highest of any driver in the top five in the standings. His 12th place finish continued his strong run of form, which included a third-place finish in the Go Bowling at The Glen and fourth-place finish in the FireKeepers Casino 400. Ross Chastain also looks to be in a menacing position, but he will need a strong outing this weekend after failing to finish in the top 20 in five of his previous six races.
Cook Out Southern 500 Pick and Prediction
We will be keen to take a chance on Kevin Harvick this weekend. He last won this race in 2020, and has picked up two victories from his previous four races. Success this weekend could firmly put him in the fight for the top prize during the playoffs.
