Event Information & Previous Winners
Racing as part of the NASCAR Cup Series will return to Atlanta this weekend, as the Quaker State 400 takes place. There hasn’t been a race in Atlanta since 2010, as the spot on the calendar was handed over to Kentucky Speedway. However, it was announced in September last year that Atlanta would get the race back. This year’s race will be slightly shorter in distance than previously, with only 400 miles being completed. Drivers involved will need to race over 260 laps in total. The first two stages are both made up of 80 laps apiece, while the final stage will consist of 100 laps.
Kurt Busch was the most recent winner of the race, as he won the second of his two Quaker State 400s in 2010. The most successful driver in the history of the race is Cale Yarborough, who won the race six times between 1967 and 1983. Chevrolet have achieved the most victories as a manufacturer, as they have boasted the winner on 17 occasions, with their most recent victory coming in 2017. Ford have had 13 winners, while Dodge has produced six winners.
Chase Elliott will come into this race as the driver to beat, as he claimed a second win of the season last time out in the Jockey Made in America 250. That victory ended a run of five straight races without victory for Elliott. Kyle Busch finished third in that race and has also been in steady form recently. Busch has achieved podium finishes in all of his last three races, with his only victory during that run coming in the Explore the Pocono Mountains 350.
Denny Hamlin remains the leader in the Drivers’ Championship. However, he is still without a win in a NASCAR Cup Series race this season. He was back in fifth in the Jockey Made in America 250 last weekend. Christopher Bell could also be a leading contender after finishing second last weekend. However, that was just his second podium finish of the season.
Quaker State 400 Pick & Prediction
Who will win the Quaker State 400 this weekend:
It will be a welcome sight to see a NASCAR Cup Series race back in Atlanta this weekend. We expect a strong challenge from Kyle Larson. Larson finished 16th last weekend but remains second in the Drivers’ Championship. He looks well-positioned to win a fourth Cup Series race of the season this weekend.
