Alabama lost a couple of close SEC matchups, preventing them from making the SEC Championship game, and subsequently, the College Football Playoff. Alabama finished ranked #5 in the College Football Playoff rankings, narrowly missing a CFP berth. The committee held true to their precedent of not selecting any 2-loss teams, despite Alabama’s losses being by a closer margin than Ohio State. Ultimately, losing their two toughest games is what held the Crimson Tide out. After making 4 consecutive national championship games, from 2015-2018, Alabama has now missed the CFP in 2 of the last 4 years. They’ll have to muster some motivation to take down the Wildcats.

Kansas State got revenge against TCU in the Big-12 championship, avenging their loss against the Horned Frogs from earlier in the year. It took them to overtime to do so, but the Wildcats claimed their first Big-12 title in 10 years. They ended the regular season scorching hot, finishing on a 4-game win streak where they racked up 157 total points. Now, they get a game against blue-blooded Alabama, with a chance to make a major statement about the direction of their program. Kansas State should keep this one close.

There is always an argument that teams with CFP aspirations underperform in regular bowls, due to being unmotivated by the lower stakes. I tend to think that this argument is just an excuse to explain why a blue blood lost to a “worse” team in their bowl, and doesn’t hold all that much of a place in reality. That being said, what do matter are opt-outs, with stronger teams that have several NFL hopefuls usually being hit the hardest. In this game, both teams have some opt-outs, so I’d favor Alabama to win in a very close one.
