The 2022 Orange Bowl features a matchup between the 10-2 Volunteers and the 11-2 Tigers. Tennessee started out the season 8-0, rising to #1 in the rankings. Unfortunately, an injury to star QB Hendon Hooker derailed their season, causing them to go 2-2 in their final 4 games. Clemson routed North Carolina, 39-10, in the ACC Championship game, but missed the CFP due to two bad losses.

Tennessee vs Clemson Vegas Odds

Game Preview

Tennessee dropped significantly in the CFP rankings following Hooker’s injury, as the committee chose to rank based on how the Volunteers would perform without him. A 63-38 loss against South Carolina validated the committee’s decision. Even with Hooker’s injury, Tennessee has a very talented roster, and is no pushover. While their chances of winning this game would undoubtedly be higher with Hooker available, I wouldn’t completely count the Volunteers out. Their wins over Alabama and LSU were team efforts.

Like Tennessee, Clemson also started out the season 8-0. They took a much different path, though, rising as high as #4 in the rankings, while competing in a weaker ACC conference. Clemson’s non-conference schedule wasn’t that much more difficult, yet they lost by 21 points to an inferior Notre Dame team, and at home against South Carolina. Those losses created major concerns for the Tigers. At the same time, their wins over Wake Forest, Syracuse, and UNC are solid. Clemson will get another real test in this game.

Tennessee vs Clemson Prediction

I’m almost tempted to pick Tennessee in this game, even with Hooker sidelined. The reason being that Clemson’s only non-conference wins came against Louisiana Tech and Furman. Now, they’ll have a matchup against an SEC powerhouse. With all that considered, I ultimately still learn towards picking the Tigers here. They played relatively well down the stretch, while the Volunteers struggled to find their footing without Hooker. I’ll take Clemson to come away with the win in a close one here.
