Lightning Need A Response
Hopes of a third straight Stanley Cup success will still be high within the Lightning camp, but the confidence of fans in achieving that goal could have been shot following a disastrous opening night in the NHL on Tuesday evening. The Lightning were hammered at the Amalie Arena by the Pittsburgh Penguins, going down to a 6-2 defeat.
The Penguins scored twice in the second period, before adding a further four goals in an action-packed final third. Tampa’s only two goals came in that final period, with Anthony Cirelli and Alex Kilorn scoring the goals. Steven Stamkos finished with two assists, while Victor Hedman and Cirelli also recorded assists. It wasn’t the best opening night for Andrei Vasilevskiy, as one of the league’s best goaltenders made 29 saves and averaged a save percentage of .906.
Red Wings Hoping For Improvement
The Detroit Red Wings kick off their 2021-22 NHL campaign against the Lightning, as they look to improve following another disappointing season last term. Detroit failed to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season and were particularly underwhelming away from home. They managed just seven victories away from Little Caesars Arena and lost on 16 occasions.
There hasn’t been much evidence to suggest that brighter times could be ahead for the Red Wings, as they dare to dream of winning a first Stanley Cup since 2008. Detroit lost three of their last four pre-season fixtures, conceding 13 goals in defeats against the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Buffalo Sabres.
The Red Wings have managed to pick up wins on a consistent basis against the Lightning, as they beat the Stanley Cup champions three times last season. Tampa did still win the majority of the fixtures, as their most recent win in May was their fifth victory against the Red Wings in the regular season. However, the Lightning have won just three times away from home against Detroit since 2019.
NHL Picks and Prediction
Who will win this NHL match-up on Thursday evening:
The Lightning certainly need to respond following a disappointing opening night in the NHL against the Penguins. Detroit have been underwhelming in pre-season, which makes them a hard franchise to support this season. Tampa have averaged nearly three goals per game in the last 53 meetings between these sides, and we could easily see them running out 3-1 winners on Thursday.
NHL Pick(s) Tonight:
- Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1
