Race Preview

The G3 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf is the eleventh race on the card and will feature eleven runners. Chad Brown has trained two of the previous three winners of the race, and he is presented for the 2023 edition by Shantisara. I have been a fan of this five-year-old for a long time, and she is a previous Grade 1 winner, having landed the G1 QE II Jockey Club Oaks in October 2021.

Last year, she was slightly disappointing, finishing second to Regal Glory in the G1 Jenny Wiley, before only placing fifth in the Fall Harvest Stakes. It could be argued that the mile was just a little on the sharp side for her that day at Keeneland, and likely favored Wakanaka, who won the final race of the Breeders’ Cup meet.

Wakanaka got the better of the favorite that day, and she does have previous form over this distance, landing the G2 Dance Smartly at Woodbine. She also has a second in the G1 Just A Game under her belt. However, I would prefer others following her effort when sixth in this race 12 months ago.

Queen Goddess is a runner for Michael McCarthy in the race this weekend. She comes into this in solid form after winning the G3 Robert J Frankel over 1 1/8 miles and the G3 Santa Ana Stakes over 1 ¼ miles. However, she came unstuck over this distance when fifth in the G3 Bayakoa, and the fact that Gulfstream favors speed is a huge concern.

Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Prediction

I’ll be hanging my hopes on Dalika for the Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf this weekend. She was extremely disappointing in the Fall Harvest when finishing sixth, but she bounced back with a very solid effort in the G3 Cardinal, beating Perseverancia. Her early speed could be crucial at Gulfstream this weekend, and I’d fancy her to finish ahead of Shantisara and Lady Rockstar.
