Event Details & Winners
The Farmers Insurance Open is one of the biggest early-season events on the PGA Tour. This event was established was back in 1952, and has regularly been played at the Torrey Pines Course. However, it has altered from the South and the North course throughout its history. It has a par 72, with a total length of 7,765 yards covered on the South Course, which will be used for the event this year.
The stroke play event has seen some exceptional performance throughout history, including the aggregate record scores set by Tiger Woods and George Burns when winning the events in 1999 and 1987, respectively. Patrick Reed was one of the most dominant winners in recent years when he won 12 months ago. The American won by five strokes from Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, Henrik Norlander, Ryan Palmer, and Xander Schauffele. Meanwhile, the prize purse is set at a record $8.4 million for the event this year.
Once again, Jon Rahm heads the betting for a PGA Tour event. The Spanish world number one was back in a tie for 14th in The American Express last weekend and was second in the Tournament of Champions on his start before that. The 27-year-old clearly has a big chance here after winning in 2017 and finishing second in 2020, but at such a short price, we would be willing to take him on.
Tony Finau endured a difficult event last weekend but was in a tie for 19th at the Tournament of Champions at the start of January. He offers excellent value this weekend, having finished second in the Farmers Insurance Open last year. Bryson DeChambeau is also a decent pick after finishing in a tie for 25th at the start of the year. The American has the arsenal to be the main player here and was second 12 months ago.
Farmers Insurance Open Pick and Prediction
We like the chances of Sam Burns this weekend. The 25-year-old finished in a tie for third at the Hero World Challenge in early December and wasn’t a million miles off the pace when finishing in a tie for 19th in the Tournament of Champions.
He was right in the mix going into the final round 12 months ago and likely needed that setback to find his best. Since then, he has finished in the top ten on six of his previous ten events. We would also take a chance on Francesco Molinari finishing in the top ten.
- Sam Burns (Win) +2500
- Francesco Molinari (Top 10) +650
