The biggest golf competition of the season so far is fast approaching, with the best stars in the world heading to the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida. There is a clear favourite in the betting to win the Players Championship this season, but who will be the one standing tall after the 39th edition of the competition?

McIlroy Heavy Favourite For Win
The leading pick for the 2020 Players Championship is the current number ranked player in the world. The Northern Irishman is back on the top of the rankings for the first time in five years after he reclaimed the honour from Brooks Koepka. There is a feeling that this is a huge season for McIlroy after he went the whole of last season without a win in a major. The Masters is just over a month away after this competition, and McIlroy will be hoping to use this competition as a springboard for a dominant season.
McIlroy will go into this competition as the defending champion as he won by one stroke in last year’s edition. On that occasion, he managed to shoot 272 to claim the win over Jim Furyk. If he is successful in winning the Players Championship this year, he would become only the sixth player to have won it on two occasions.
His form so far this season has been excellent, as he has continued to build on his FedEx Cup success from last year. He has already achieved five top-ten finishes this season, and he would be the strong favourite to achieve that as a bare minimum. However, the Northern Irishman will be where the majority of the smart money will be.
Who Could Topple McIlroy?
With McIlroy being the heavy favourite to achieve success in the Players Championship, there could be value elsewhere in the market. There is a field of 144 players, which means the majority of leading sportsbooks for golf will be offering increased places on an each-way bet. Brooks Koepka’s price is huge for a player that was ranked number one for much of last season, which means a lot of gamblers will be taking that bet.
A good pick could also be Xander Schauffele. The American finished second in the event in 2018, and impressed throughout the season last term. He accumulated six top-ten finishes last season and won two events, and came second on two occasions also. He is valued at an attractive +2200, which does present excellent each-way value; especially for a player who has already proven that he can perform on this course. Cantlay is also a high price for a player that achieved nine top-ten finishes last season.
However, it’s difficult to bet against McIlroy winning the Players Championship this year, but there could be value to be made on an each-way bet for Schauffele.
