Real Madrid Wins Spanish Super Cup After Beating Atletico Madrid on Penalties

The Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos scored the decisive penalty against Atletico Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup last evening in Saudi Arabia.

The legendary defender sent the Atleti goalkeeper the wrong way, setting the final score 4:1 on penalties. Thomas Partey and Saul Niguez missed their penalties for Atletico Madrid, with Kieran Trippier being the only player in the red and white shirt to put a penalty in.

Trippier’s goal wasn’t enough as none of Real Madrid’s penalty takers missed their chance from the spot. In addition to Ramos, three other Real Madrid players scored their penalties, namely Daniel Carvajal, Rodrygo, and Luka Modric.

Despite finishing 0:0 after 120 minutes, the match was packed with excitements. Both sides had their share of chances throughout the game, but thanks to impressive performances of goalkeepers, no goals were scored.

Real Madrid was the dominant side, with the ball in their possession for most of the game. Los Blancos were also the team with more goal attempts than the opposition. Still, Atletico Madrid had some pretty good goal chances.

The drama reached its peak in the extra time when Valverde made a foul on Morata, who was one-on-one with Courtois, for which the Real Madrid player received a red card.

Valverde’s Red Card

Federico Valverde was one of the key figures of Los Blancos in this match, not only for his performance in the midfield but also for preventing Alvaro Morata from scoring in the second part of the extra time.

For his foul, Valverde received a red card, but that didn’t stop him from getting the man of the match award. In fact, even Atletico Madrid’s boss Diego Simeone applauded him for the foul.

The 21-year-old also received praise on social media, with hundreds of Real Madrid fans suggesting a statue should be erected in his honor.

“I know it’s not good what I did, but I didn’t have any other option.”

Valverde said after the match.

Valverde played down the talk after the match, admitting that his decision wasn’t the right thing to do. He did, however, add that he had no other option before him.

New Format of the Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España) saw its 36th edition this month, but unlike in the past, this year, the cup saw four teams competing for the trophy, namely Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia.

The tournament featured Valencia and Barcelona who got invited after playing in the final of the Copa Del Rey 2019. The other two teams got the invitation based on their performance in La Liga in the season 2018-19. Atletico finished second, while Los Blancos ended the season a spot lower.

Real Madrid beat Valencia 3:1 in the semifinal, while Atletico Madrid got the place in the Super Cup final after eliminating Barcelona in a thrilling 3:2 victory.

All three matches of the Spanish Cup were played at King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
