Safeway Open 2020 Odds: Mickleson Favorite, Steele Returning

We are a little too close to the date, but here is our preview for the upcoming Safeway Open which will take place in Napa, California and tee off on Thursday, September 10th.  The event promises to be every bit as exciting and we are thrilled to bring you another preview, especially after this week’s PGA Tour Championship event.

It was a first FedEx Cup title for Johnson making his accomplishment even more significant. Well, after a short three-day break, we are back in the world of top golf at Napa, California. The event is highly contested with no telling what could happen.

The current favorites, Phil Mickelson and Si Woo Kim look as formidable as they have ever been, and Johnson will be skipping this leg of the competition.

Phil Mickelson’s Return: Is It Too Blown Out of Proportion?

Phil Mickelson is coming in hot as you may have guessed, after he secured the Charles Schwab Series on August 2426, 2020. He won’t have to face Dustin Johnson who won the East Lake Golf Course Tour Championship on Monday, which is a relief.

Yet, Mickelson has a wholesome field of opponents to look forward to, and none of these guys seem too inclined to give up on an easy win. However, Mickelson seems all inclined to give it his best shot.

He has previously shown up at the Safeway Open in 2016 and 2017, placing T-8 and T-3 respectively. Yet, fans have been interested in his performance through and through. According to Daniel Rapaport, Mickelson is all set up for success. He averages 301 off tee and landed T2 in WGC in August.

The question is, can he deliver the same performance, and perhaps push it for a quick win? Now, Mickleson is priced as favorite (+2200) which should give him some confidence. However, he has also ended up T-24 in almost all of his last 9 tour events, bar his victory last month. The good news is he doesn’t have to face former champions who dominate the field.

Who Won the Last Five Safeway Open Events?

2019Cameron Champ
2018Kevin Tway
2017Brendan Steele
2016Brendan Steele
2015Emiliano Grillo

Now, none of these guys is really competing this year other than Brendan Steele who is priced (+2600). Now Steele is definitely no random name on the golfing scene. He has actually won both the 2016 and 2017 events of the Safeway Open, but has struggled after that. Thursday’s event will have quite a few surprises tucked neatly along the way, that’s for sure.

Who Else Is on Our Watch list?

If you are looking for some long shots, you definitely have them. First, there is Harold Varner III (+3000), who will be coming back with some pretty decent average performance. He definitely doesn’t get to T-2 too often, but Varner has been in the Top 20 consistently over the past years, and he doesn’t seem to do any worse than that whereas even Mickleson slips past that sometimes.

Mark Hubbard (+5000) is another very long shot here. His last year’s performance at the Safeway Open put him T-13 and he seems to be doing well this year. His best results in 2020 include a T2 at the Houston Open, T9 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and a T 10 at the Military Tribute at the Greenbrier.

Now, just for the kicks of it, you can also bet on Kevin Tway (+30000) whose best performance this year is T29 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He only has one PGA Tour victory as well.
