TV commercials take about 33% of the broadcast of an average NFL game according to a study from 2018. This is why it’s not surprising that companies are investing a lot of effort (and money) to give the viewers a good time during the commercial break. The same is going to be the case with Super Bowl LIV commercials, some of which have been in the spotlight days before the big game.
During the broadcast of the San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday evening on Fox, the viewers will get to watch more than 50 different adverts. Some of those have already been released on YouTube, stirring up controversies along the way.
Drag Queen Commercial
Sabra’s Super Bowl LIV commercial has caused a lot of controversies as the hummus company has decided to feature two drag queens in the advert. Kim Chi and Miz Cracker, the stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race are about to make history as the first-ever drag performers to appear in a Super Bowl commercial.
In a teaser for the Sabra Hummus Helmet Hair advert that’s available on YouTube, Miz Cracker is seen trying to put on a football helmet over a huge wig.
The teaser for Sabra’s Super Bowl LIV commercial was met with mixed reactions. Some find it to be a positive statement about LGBT rights; others feel the advert is an attack on the family-friendly nature of the Super Bowl.
A week after the video was uploaded, the number of views is over 200k. What’s interesting is that it has significantly more Dislikes than Likes, which isn’t the case with other commercials.
Bryan Cranston in The Shining Parody
Bryan Cranston stars in the commercial for Mountain Dew Zero Sugar, in which he and Tracee Ellis Ross are recreating the famous scene from The Shining (1980).
Instead of chasing his wife to kill her with an ax like Jack Nicholson’s character, Cranston just wants to offer her the soft drink.
Rick and Morty x Pringles
One of the most-viewed Super Bowl LIV commercials on YouTube has been the one made by Adult Swim, the production studio behind popular cartoon Rick and Morty.
The advert was done in collaboration with Pringles, whose snacks Morty’s clones are munching in the video while fighting Rick and Summer.
Lucky Dog Commercial
The WeatherTech advert called “Lucky Dog” will air in the second quarter of the match, for which the company will have to cash out more than $6M. This wouldn’t be strange if this were a commercial advertisement.
However, the ad in question is meant to be a tribute to UW-Madison’s veterinary school on behalf of WeatherTech owner and CEO David MacNeil. The vets from the University of Wisconsin-Madison managed to save the life of MacNeil’s dog after the 7-year-old golden retriever was diagnosed with a heart tumor.
Betting On Super Bowl LIV Commercials
Bookmakers are offering all sorts of Super Bowl LIV props including the ones focused on the ad breaks. For example, bettors have the chance to put their money on which commercial is going to be the most-watched. Bettors can also bet on the exact number of commercials, as well as try to guess which ad is going to be aired first.
In addition, some bookmakers like MyBookie are letting the players come up with their own Super Bowl props, which can include literally anything, commercials included.
