Robert Whittaker (-225) vs. Kelvin Gastelum (+190)
The opening event this year, UFC 234, will be held in Melbourne, Australia with a fight for the middleweight belt. Robert Whittaker (20-4), the current title holder, is matched up against Kelvin Gastelum (15-3) of Australia. Gastelum, though, seems determined to have a first go at a title in his career.
Whittaker is the definite favorite here, having won the interim title back on December 7, 2017, after he dethroned the reigning champion, George St. Pierre. Coming into the fight, Gastelum will have to adapt to a number of factors that could impede his performance.
Based on what we know about these two athletes, Whittaker has more fights under his belt already, and he has a slightly more advantageous reach at 73.5″, which is longer than Gastelum’s 71.5″.
Gastelum will also have to adapt to switching time zones, which can wear down an athlete easily. All the advantages point in the direction of Whittaker who comfortable with extended fights, relying on his endurance and bidding his time.
We expect Whittaker to down Gastelum before the fifth round successfully defending his title.
We recommend: Robert Whittaker (-225)
Anderson Silva (+525) vs. Israel Adesanya (-700)
Israel Adesanya is a new face in the UFC, having only signed in December 2017. Since then, he has managed to earn a name for himself in the short period between then and now. Fighting Rob Wilkinson on February 11, 2018, Adesanya secured his first victory taking Wilkinson by TKO in the second round of the match.
With Adesanya’s career launched, the fighter secured a string of victories after his first appearance, going undefeated so far. On July 6, 2018, Adesanya managed to outlast Brad Tavares, managing a victory by unanimous decision.
His performance has been unflagging, adding Derek Brunson on his list of defeated opponents in the UFC, landing a successful technical knockout versus Brunson in the first round of UFC 230, November 3, 2018.
Now, Adesanya will be facing off against the former middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Silva isn’t in the best shape of his career and his last fight was back in February 2017 when he defeated Brunson.
Adesanya has gone undefeated and seems to be in the prime of his UFC career, breaking into an entirely new competition. He’s determined and goal-driven whereas Silva is perceived as a declining power in the UFC, although a comeback is possible.
If you’re looking for a safe bet to make, remember that Adesanya has all the ingredients of a champion, and yet – he’ll be facing Silva.
Should Silva succeed to end his winning streak, anyone backing the former middleweight champion stands a real chance to turn a solid profit.
We recommend: Israel Adesanya (-700)
