With his one-round TKO beatdown of Conor McGregor at Saturday night, Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier is most likely next in line for a showdown with UFC lightweight champion Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira.
Despite Oliveira riding a nine-fight win streak, including a dominant second round TKO over Michael Chandler to win the vacant 155-belt in May, the 31-year old Brazilian opened a +155 underdog. Minutes after Dustin Poirier had his hand raised and while Conor McGregor was still on the mat nursing his broken leg, BetOnline.ag opened Poirier a -180 favorite versus Oliveira.
An Oliveira versus Poirier match-up will be an exciting one for sure. The well-rounded Oliveira has finished eight of his last night opponents – five by submission and three via TKO/KO. Poirier is allergic to a boring fight; with a 7-1 record over his last eight bouts, Poirier finished his opponent five times.
Whereas a title fight with Oliveira is the obvious next fight for Poirier, it is anyone’s guess on what is next for McGregor. A trilogy fight with Nate Diaz makes the most sense, if the Irishmen wants to continue fighting that is. Or perhaps a big-money boxing fight versus Manny Pacquiao or even Jake Paul. McGregor will want a chance at redemption versus Poirier, but unless Poirier loses to Oliveira, that fight makes little sense outside of a cash-grab at this point. Stay tuned.
