Zozo Championship Preview
The Zozo Championship is part of the Japan Golf Tour and PGA Tour, and there is a field of 78 players that will be competing for the top honours at the event. There is set to be $8 million in prize money at the event, and the course consists of 72-holes. Unlike other events, there is no cut in the field, which means the same 78 players that start the event will finish it.
The field will be made up of the top 60 players from the FedEx Cup standings from the previous year, as well as the top seven players in the Japan Golf Tour rankings. There will also be eight sponsored picks and three players that finished at the top of the Bridgestone Open.
This will be just the second year that the event has taken place, with last years event in Narashino being the first. Last year’s winner of the event was Tiger Woods, who won by three strokes from Hideko Matsuyama. However, his odds of repeating that feat this year are pretty high. He finished at a scored of 261 in last years event, but there will be better value in the field this year.
Rahm The Market Favourite
The Sherwood Country Club is no stranger to celebrity guests, with Justin Timberlake, Mel Gibson and Will Smith all having a membership at the club. The Sherwood used to host the World Challenge up until 2013. Tiger Woods won four titles at the course, which means that his experience on the course could make him a good each-way bet this weekend at +2500.
However, there are likely to be a number of players in contention. Jon Rahm is the outright favourite to win the event, and is good value for that price. Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele has been in decent form throughout the season and could be a solid each-way chance. However, the preference for pick in this year’s event is Webb Simpson, who has the type of game that could flourish in this competition.
He finished in the top 15 of events on five occasions last season, and has already started this season in the same form. Simpson finished in eighth in the US Open, and then 13th in the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open. This will not be the first time that he has been involved on this course either, as he has a decent record at Sherwood. This could be the weekend when he wins his eighth PGA Tour event.
