  • The Marlins were defeated by the Cubs, 4-1, on Friday.
  • Chicago returned to a record of .500 with the win.
  • The Cubs are 117-114 in their all-time history against Miami.

The Marlins (16-17) and the Cubs (16-16) face off in a key NL clash. Both teams are hanging around .500, and attempting to stay afloat. A new win or loss streak here could determine the direction of their seasons.

Game Preview

Miami dropped back below .500 following Friday’s loss to the Cubs. Their extremely streaky season continues, as they fight to maintain a decent position in the NL East division. The Marlins started the year out 4-7, before heating up and going 8-2 over their next 10 games, improving to 12-9. Since then, they’ve lost 4 straight, won 4 straight, and now once again have lost 4 in a row. Miami needs pitching consistency.

The Cubs have also been quite streaky this season. They surprised many people when they jumped out to a confident 12-7 start, but have gone just 4-9 since then. Prior to Friday’s win against the Marlins, Chicago had lost 3 of 4 games to the bottom-dwelling Nationals and were swept in 3 games by Miami. They need to take advantage of being back at home and pick up some wins before another brutal road stretch starts.

Prediction

The Marlins have the advantage of being 3-1 against the Cubs so far this season, but all 3 of the wins came at home, and the loss was the most recent game in Chicago. Though this matchup could go either way, I’d look to the pitching matchup for a good indication of the potential winner. Chicago’s Drew Smyly (2.83 ERA) should have a notable advantage over Miami’s Bryan Hoeing (6.23 ERA). I’ll take the Cubs here.
