Series Preview

Philadelphia was the only team to sweep their first-round series, making quick work of the Nets. They won each game by an average score of 104-92, using their defense to completely shut Brooklyn down. The 76ers lost star Center Joel Embiid to an injury during the tail-end of the series, but managed to earn him over a week of rest because of the sweep. They’ll be hoping Embiid is fully ready to go against Boston.

The Celtics managed to win Game 6 in Atlanta, avoiding an elimination game in Game 7. They took more time to win their series than any of the other 3 teams in the Eastern Conference, but remain the favorite to make the NBA Finals. Boston’s excellent guard play, led by superstar Jayson Tatum, will be problematic for the 76ers, whose interior defense is better than their perimeter defense. Boston will aim to exploit that.

Picks

This series should be an absolute classic between two extremely capable teams. The health and availability of Joel Embiid will make a massive difference, and the latest news that he has been held out of practice is not all that encouraging. The 76ers may be playing it safe with Embiid, but even if he’s able to go, they’ll be at a disadvantage in this series. I see it going the distance to Game 7, with Boston winning it.
