Clemson continued their incredible run with a win over Arizona in the Sweet 16. The Tigers had proved how capable they were in non-conference play, picking up wins over Alabama, South Carolina, TCU, and Boise State. On the other hand, they also lost to some bad teams, casting some doubt over their ability. Clearly, the wins were the better indicator of Clemson’s ability, as they’ve now toppled red-hot New Mexico followed by upsets over Baylor and Arizona. PJ Hall continues to be a focal point for Clemson.
Alabama managed to defeat 1-seed North Carolina in a very competitive Sweet 16 game. The Crimson Tide ranked closer to a 2-seed in the metrics than the 4-seed they received, allowing them to enter that game with a solid chance of winning. They did just that, competing closely with the Tar Heels before pulling away late. In a subpar shooting night for Mark Sears, Grant Nelson stepped up, leading the way with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks. He will be key in matching up down low with PJ Hall.
Prediction
Alabama and Clemson met on the national stage in California five years ago, but it was for a college football championship. This time around, a storied football rivalry matches up on the basketball court, with each team fighting for the first Final Four appearance in school history. Both teams are well tested by tough schedules, and are not fluky Cinderellas running out of steam, but rather real title contenders. I see this game coming down to the wire, with Alabama’s stellar offense eventually pulling away.
NCAAB Picks:
- Alabama 83, Clemson 79 (BAMA -2.5)
