  • St. John’s picked up their 5th straight win, after defeating Georgetown 86-78.
  • Seton Hall had no trouble defeating DePaul, winning 86-62, and rising to 20-11.
  • These two teams last faced off on February 18, in a game that Seton Hall won 68-62.

Selection Sunday is less than a week away! Let’s look at this Big East Tournament matchup between the St. John’s Red Storm and the Seton Hall Pirates. Both teams are right on the bubble, needing a win here.

Preview

St. John’s has been one of the streakiest teams in college basketball this season. Two weeks into January, they held a 12-4 record and were on pace to receive a 7-seed in the tournament. What followed was a 2-8 span that dropped them to 14-12 and sent them stumbling well out of the projected field of 68. Five wins in a row later, and the Red Storm are right back in the bubble discussion. They need to win this matchup.

Seton Hall finds themselves into a peculiar position among the bubble teams. Their metrics leave much to be desired, sitting at #55 in KenPom, and #62 in the NET. On the other hand, the Pirates went 13-7 in a tough Big East, picked up five Q1 wins, and a signature win over UConn. Combined with their 20-11 record, that should be enough to overlook their poor metrics, A win over St. John’s would aid those chances more.

Prediction

This type of game between two teams right on the NCAA Tournament bubble is what makes the week leading up to Selection Sunday so exciting. With both of their seasons on the line, these teams should put up a competitive brawl that stays close until the very end. Ultimately, I like Seton Hall to claim the victory.
