Preview

USC enters this season with some high expectations. After making the tournament last year, the Trojans enter this year ranked for the first time in over a decade. Their reward is a brutal opening game against Ohio State. USC has a young team that could struggle offensively against the Buckeyes. On the other hand, they’re set up very well for the next few seasons, which will be crucial in their move to the Big-10.

Ohio State had one of the best defenses in college basketball last season, and has a chance to be the overall top squad this year. The full-court press utilized by head coach Kevin McGuff has been known to give other teams fits, and reflects a defensive mindset that is rare in basketball nowadays. They also brought in ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Celeste Taylor, which will make their defense even more elite.

Prediction

The story for Ohio State this season will once again be defense. They managed to add even more talent to an already top-ranking squad. That provides them with the perfect matchup against less experienced teams like USC. I don’t expect to a total blowout here, but I do see the Buckeyes exceptional defense creating a ton of havoc for the Trojans. I expect them to hold USC to about 50 points and earn the win.
