Preview
East Carolina had a solid season last year, finishing 8-5. After their bowl game in 2021 was cancelled, the Birmingham bowl wound up being their first bowl game since 2014. Upon winning it, 53-29, over Coastal Carolina, the Pirates earned their first bowl victory since moving from the C-USA to the AAC. With a 13-10 record over the past two seasons and some of the top talent gone from the AAC, ECU could fight for first.
Michigan entered the CFP with a 13-0 record last year, fully dominating. They breezed past #10 Penn State 41-17, and then earned their most dominant road win over Ohio State in the history of the rivalry. The 45-23 victory was a statement win for a Wolverines team that was 3-16 against the Buckeyes since their last road win. Despite their loss to TCU after, Michigan should finish near the top of the pack once again.
Prediction
It would be an absolutely stunning upset if East Carolina managed to win this game, but it’s certainly not impossible. Upsets are the most common in the first week, though Michigan’s consistency with J.J. McCarthy returning under center should prevent any real first week jitters. I see the Wolverines winning this one pretty easily, although I wouldn’t expect a complete blowout against a scrappy Pirates squad.
