Preview
North Carolina opened last season unranked, but quickly made a name for themselves. After starting 9-1, the Tar Heels rose to #13 in the rankings. Unfortunately, they lost their last 4 games of the year, including the ACC title game to Clemson and the Holiday Bowl to Oregon. Even so, North Carolina has reason to be hopeful again this season, with QB Drake Maye returning under center. They’ll have a shot to win the ACC.
South Carolina managed to climb into the rankings towards the tail end of last season, thanks to a hot finish. It’ll be interesting to see if we get the Gamecocks that lost to Florida and Georgia by a combined score of 86-13, or the team that blew out #5 Tennessee and then upset Clemson on the road. It’s more likely to be the latter, with those results coming more recently. South Carolina could surprise this season.
Prediction
When these two teams last played each other in 2021, the Gamecocks won by three scores, but a lot has changed for each team since then. Currently, North Carolina is the favorite to win this matchup as the sole ranked team. I’m not sure if I agree with that projection, though. South Carolina finished strong in the SEC last year, and then went on to beat Clemson. I see them winning this rivalry game against North Carolina.
